loving the recipes guys! Today we have stew, it's in the slow cooker and smells loooovely. I need to make more use of this amazing invention so was thinking i could cook my whole chicken in their? yay or nay? What do i do?
Am loving this thread, it's very insightful.
I can say categorically that chicken done in the slow cooker is divine. Truly divine. It's a lot less dry than roasted. It's only downside is it looks a bit pale. The meat just falls off the carcase so there's no need to carve either. I've turned a medium chicken into all sorts from the slow cooker (chicken casserole using carrot, stock cube, tomato puree, onions, dumplings on top for last half hour - just flour and water, salt and pepper - magic). My husband calls me a miser with a chicken. I take after my dad and pick the bones clean. I even turn the chicken over because there's these two wee bits either side and they're just fabulous. You get the stock at the end too so reboil the bones and there you have it.
I shall watch your thread with great interest and good luckGrocery Challenge M: £450/£425.08 A: £400/£.May -£400/£361 June £380/£230 (pages 18 & 27 explain)0 -
Fletch! Those two bits under the chicken are often called chicken oysters! They are the nicest meat on the bird... I didn't know about them for years! Yummy0

it made me feel a bit depressed watching it actually as she said she used to have a good cry sometimes because they were so poor
I didn't actually see it, it was my Mum who had watched the programme. It made quite an impression on her and she was so touched by how this lady managed to provide food and keep the family going, although she did used to feel low and cry.
I hope things got better for her, I used to think about her quite often, but over the years I had other things to think about, as you do.
It was thinking about Brambles post that made me remember her. Women still seem to be considered the weaker sex by some, but I have known some very strong women in my time, women who have managed to keep the family together through some very tough times and she seems to have been one of those.0 -

bramble, you thought about writing a blog? I know Allegra would be interested in reading it?
There are plenty of people out there who would be happy to benefit from all the advice on this thread and other threads, but to shy to ask. It would be nice to see what you make and how, etc.
I slow cook whole chicken sometimes. Yes it falls off the bone very easily! Same with lamb shanks. Yummy.0 -
dang -I was hoping you has a top tip for cheap toms!
Sadly notI wonder where i cheapest? I have noticed the plum ones are cheaper than chopped though, not sure why?
OP you could also use the £14 left to buy a gammon joint for £3.99 for a sunday roast and use left overs for sandwiches and ham pasta-I find own brand soup very cheap and makes a tasty pasta sauce0 -
And use the gammon stock for lentil and carrot soup - cheap, filling and scrummy0
