Well, after having two portions of bolognaise for lunch, DS has come in from work and instead of putting one chop on the George Forman for his tea, put two on. My fault really. There was a pack of four that I had taken out of the freezer and me and hubby had one each and I put the other two in the fridge. When DS came in I called out to him that he needed to put his chop on grill. When I looked they were both gone. I had intended cutting the other one up as only me and hubby for tea tomorrow and stir frying with veg and rice. Oh well, so much for my meal stretching.

ooo egg and and bacon pie! will do a recipe seach for that one!

plan to make left over pasties didn't quite work....Oh has decided the puppy is too skinny and gave him the remains of our stew to 'bulk him up' - yes the dog is lean, but he has a 17kg bag of food to last him till pay day and we don't quite have that luxury!!!

Hi Bramble - sorry worrying about your OH, if he wants to give HIS food to the puppy then thats food out of HIS tummy not yours.

As for dog food, on the slow cooker thread there is a dog food receipe, I can't find it on a search but it was basically; lentils & pearl barley in equal measures, carrots or any left over veg, cheap mince. (meat could be any cheap meat / left overs).
Cover with water a bit of stock, salt & pepper for flavour.

My dog has been a fussy eater and is a GSD cross so has a senstive tummy, but this has proved a real winner. (i also used up some pudding rice instead of pearl barley this time so any cupboard leftovers are worth considering)

Bit of a disater today, OH decided he didn't want the pasta bake for dinner, so had to run to waitrose and get some mince to do spag bol, not end of the world, had half a jar of pasta sauce in fridge i thought i'd have to chuck, means we can have pasta bake later on in the month.

I have been meal planning my meals for next month and I want to be fully prepared and not panicing like this month. so i've chosen
    4 chicken dishes
    4 pasta dishes
    8 Friday/saturday easy cooking dishes
    4 sunday lunch dishes
    4 rice dishes
    4 slow cooker dishes

thats enough meals for the whole month with out repeating the same dish, but planning ahead i can buy simmilar ingredients that can be used to achieve more than 1 dish.

    Planing my weekend out too!
Saturday i want to make a vegetable soup, victoria sponge and some coffee buns for the week ahead.

  • OH needs a kick up the bum - firstly he feeds what could be a meal to the dog  then refuses a pasta bake - I am sorry but he is not getting his head around the problems that you have for the month.

Oh, right. Yup, he needs a kick up the bum. You're not doing anything daft like tell him what you're planning to make for meals are you? Just say you're not sure then stick it on a plate in front of him. It's easier to say "tough, that's it!" when they moan if it's already dinnertime and they're hungry!

As to him eating leftovers or giving them to the dog...well either freeze them straight away or put them in a plastic box labelled "Friday's Dinner" or somesuch. I really had to break my OH of grazing his way through the fridge and eating ingredients for planned meals. A combination of being firm, a few meals turning up lacking something crucial (the macaroni cheese that had no cheese was particularly revolting) and making sure there were some snack foods availible at all times worked for me.

At no point would I be running out to the shops to buy unbudgeted for food just because he moaned. At the very least send him out and tell him to pay for it out his beer money or something! And remind him that it's not just a question of you trying to keep to a budget, you both have to.
    Val.

i must be too laid back! We've still got the pasta bake for another night, and the only thing that's changed is some money has gone out the pot from next week's budget. We'd have had spag bol at some point this month anyway! - plus it's safer if i go to the shop for any un budgeted spending otherwise we've really be up **** creek in terms of having a budget! We've got a whole un opened box of

The stew, he'll learn soon enough, he's not got the pastie's he'd usually have along side his rolls for the rest of the week now!

my wonderful plan to combat his sudden changes of heart when it comes to dinner time is on sunday i'll prep ahead as much as possible for evening meals, make a shepherds pie so all we need to do is pop it in the oven, same with things like lasagne, and then when it comes to dinner time theres no, oh i don't fancy it because all i'll do is pick one of them or let him chose, it'll go in the oven and job done!

There was a program called Economy Gastronomy on a while back, just googled it and you can still watch some of the episodes.

Two chefs showed how to do a batch cook that could be used differently throughout the week, it might give you some inspiration I know I really enjoyed it when it was on tv.

fish and chips tonight.. that was the last of that from the freezer. Got 3 chicken breasts from Mr S for 3.99 today, tomorrow we're doing potato bake, and oh can have 1 chicken breast and veg, i'll skip the meat. that leaves 2 for next week.

What can i do with my leftover chicken from my roast? i've got 2 chicken pies in the freezer so don't really want to do another pie, any other ideas?
