a blog is a great idea!!

So how do i actually cook my chicken in my slow cooker? I'd like to try it tomorrow if possible.

Tonight i think we'll do burgers, (have 4 qtr pounders in the freezer) I'll nip to waitrose on my way home and get soem reduced rolls as the rustic ones we like get reduced from 45p to 5p near closing! and i'll made some potato wedges to along with that.

lunch is noodles from the store cupboard.

trying to think ahead for next week now, things i can cook over the weekend that can make more than 1 or 2 meals. We had hoped OH would have been paid by now, but i keep checking online banking religiously and nadda! (the day he gets paid sainsburys is getting a good portion of that money!) i've realised now the importance of having a well stocked store cupboard, ours is usually lacking and it seems moreso this month! So planning ahead, what are the store cupboard items you could not live without?

The great thing i'm learning from all this is that i don't have to spend as much as i thought on a food shop, and will probably try and keep this up in the run up to christmas so money isn't so tight elsewhere!

I suppose it depends on which slowcooker you have, but I have the big oval Morphy Richards one and I put a chicken in at 7.00am on a Sunday and it is done by 2.00pm. I leave it on low and add a little water. Sometime I add herbs etc but usually just the chicken and splash of water.

    For storecupboard:
    Tea
    Coffee
Cocoa - for cakes if not for drinking
    Salt
    Pepper
    Herbs and spices
    Gravy granules/stock cubes
    worcester sauce
    tomato ketchup/brown sauce
    vinegars
    mayonaise
    pasta
    rice
    noodles
    tinned tomatoes
    baked beans/kidney beans/other tinned beans
condensed soups - make good basis for pasta bakes etc
dried pulses including the mixed soup mix
    tinned tuna/salmon/sardines/makeral
tinned veg - I have found having tinned potatoes handy for an emergency too.
    Breakfast cereals and oats
    long life milk
    dried fruit
    flour
    yeast
    sugar
tinned corned beef/other meat - I find a couple of tins of stewing steak good standbys tho not MSE
    Custard powder

    In fridge:
    butter/marg/lard
    milk
    cheese
    eggs - you've got those
    bacon

This is just off top of my head and I know there are threads on storecupboard stuff but I don't know how to do links.

I think from these you could make meals, pies, quich and cakes/biscuits

I always have onions and carrots in fresh and selection of frozen veg in the freezer including a stirfry mix from Tesco. I usually have frozen peppers in because then `i can just use what I want and don't have them going off in the fridge although sometimes if they are reduced I buy fresh and chop up and freeze myself. I can't remember how big your freezer is. HTH

I've heard that putting the chicken in breast down is best as this is the thickest part.

My slow cooker book says to put on high and then turn down 2 hours later - but I'm not in 2 hrs later so just cook on med or high and ensure their is enough stock so it doesn't get dry.

I've only done chicken portions so far or the carcass to get the last of the meat off (it made a pie!) also keep all the juices as this is chicken stock.

With the stock cupboard stuff, keep a pad in the kitchen and then write down the items you use per meal that are cupboard items - ie spread on toast / milk & sugar in drinks / salt when cooking / stock cubes etc.
This will build up a list of what YOU use and how much you use them.

got some bacon today as well to bulk out OH's burgers (pretty bad quality ones) and it also means we can do a fry up one evening for a meal too.

I'm probably going to just to the chicken in the oven i think, it's only a little one so won't take too long to cook i don't think. but i'm planning more slow cooker orientated recipes for next week - cheaper cuts of meat! and no cooking for me when i get home from work. win win!!

So keep them recipes coming guys!
