    Banks say this act does not apply if you use the account that the benefits go into to pay household bills. I have also taken this to the ombudsman and they/ he agreed with my bank that they can take my benefit.

    banks are above the law and are supported by "independent" organisations this month they took 75 pounds of my 140 jsa

    I think the Coop Cashminder account is probably one of the best of the current accounts still available, and (though I have a different type of account) I have always found them helpful to deal with. They list a charge of £15 for an unpaid direct debit; but I think they would be more sympathetic than the other banks in many circumstances.
