So True About The Banks Of Course They Know You Get Benefit

But millions and millions of people get benefits, every family, every pensioner, everyone not working for whatever reason. Do you really think all these people should be exempt from bank charges?

Everyone should be exempt from bank charges and paying interest. The people of this country need to wake up and realise the system that controls the money.

Then the banks will have no obligation to let any of us have bank accounts or to borrow money.

Actually, no-one should be exempt from bank charges, it's just the level of charge that should be altered, which is exactly what the OFT are now looking into. Anyway, this should be for Discussion Time (I know, I responded, shouldn't have but just wanted to put the record straight)

The banks should be nationalised and interest abolished.

I wouldn't trust Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling with a penny piece of mine. If they have those 2 clowns in charge then my money will be under the mattress.

By interest abolished do you mean on savings or just on what you want to borrow?
  • I'm confused: I was on IB and have moved onto JSA, the bank have regularly deducted money from my account (over a quarter of my benefits each month) I have cancelled all my DD and I'm seriously in debt. So, is it legal to deduct money from my benefits or not? I made them aware of my status when I lost my job.

Yes the banks are within the law to deduct bank charges from ANY money that goes into the account, from whatever source.

i would suggest opening another account, perhaps at the Post Office for your benefits to go into then come to an arrangement about repayment with the original bank. also start the reclaiming process with Martin's template letters.
  • As to what krisskross was proposing, I personally think it is quite sensible if you ONLY have benefits as an income to make sure no direcrt debits come out of them.

If you are housebound you could use internet banking to pay your bills, as and when it is sutable for you to do so.. On the Lloyds TSB site, you can even set up for them to send you a 'reminder' of when your bill is due (I think).

Most of my bills in Spain I either pay manually or by internet banking as we very often only have a small amount of money in the account as we are waiting for the money to be transferred from the UK. Then if there is not enough money in the account, I don't pay the bill until there is. (Usually not more than a week). Simple.

Those who are not housebound could go to the bank and manually pay them or even use the old method of sticking a cheque in the post.

I don't think krisskross deserved the flaming she got because there are ways to pay without direct debit, even if you are housebound. Then the bank will not take money from your Benefit.

  • Thanks for the feedback krisskross. I've been in touch with http://www.communitylegaladvice.org.uk/ and I'm going to get some legal clarification. I'm also going to see about getting bank charges refunded as a hardship case. Fingers crossed as I am really struggling at the moment.
