If you honestly believe there is not is not anyone completely housebound without a soul in the world, friend, family or a social worker that could pay a bill, then you must be pretty naive. People die alone all the time undiscovered because they had nobody to look out for them.
    Absolutely true.
There are days I don't speak to anyone or see anyone but I at least CAN get out.
I know of many people, particularly the elderly who have relatives who are happily waiting for a handout , come the day, but absolutely do not think it any sort of priority to look out for their relative.
We live in a pretty heartless world where selfishness is the order of the day and 'take take take' is the motto of life.:o

Yes people die alone and undiscovered but not because they are housebound, it is usually because they are complete loners.
    What an ar*e you are.
I do hope you NEVER find yourself in a similar situation because by then it will be too late to show understanding towards those you malign.

How rude you are.How have I maligned anyone?

That is the problem with these boards. Sometimes there is total over reaction. I suggest that people who may not have suffiicient cash at all times to meet direct debits should not have them but find other methods of paying bills. I am now being sworn at and wished all sorts of nasties to descend on me.

kk, you are being incredibly naive on this, and I can see why people are taking offence at your posts.

I for one do not have anybody to help me with my finances. Fortunately I am financially savvy and not in any financial difficulties. I have internet access at home. I am rarely able to leave the house and never use the phone. If it was not for having internet access and all regular payments being made by direct debit, I have no doubt that I would be on the streets by now (even with money being available to pay the bills).

I do all my shopping online. Occasionally my mum gets me a few bits in, but she is not financially savvy enough to help me with paying bills etc.

I am not a 'complete loner', I am unwell.
    Gone ... or have I?

But none of this was the point. And you have said you are not alone. You do have someone to be aware for you.

I am not naive, I have worked with some of the poorest people in the country for many years, liased with Social Services on their behalf. Been told in no uncertain terms to mind my own business as the person does not want any help or interference as they see it. People are very often in the circumstance of having absolutely no one because that is how they want it. It would be an extremely unusual occurence for someone to live alone, be completely housebound and have absolutely no one.

And the reason often for them being undiscovered for weeks or months if they die is because they have regular payments going into a bank account and all payments made by direct debit so nothing appears to be amiss.

Anyway my last post on the subject. All this because I said direct debits are not the answer for everyone.

You really do not have a clue on this kk.

No, I am not alone, I have friends, I even have someone that pops over a few times a week and rogers me senseless. But do I have someone to 'be aware' for me? No, not one bit.

The fact that there are three people just on this thread that have found themselves in this position shows that it certainly is not rare. I also know of two other MSEers who are in the same position.

I would go back to what flossy_splodge said earlier, I hope that you never end up in this position, because you would get the shock of your life.

dmg has said it -- that is the position I am in. I suffer from fibromyalgia syndrome, generalised hypermobility syndrome, ultradian-cycling atypical bipolar disorder, asthma, migraines and severe anxiety attacks. I rarely go out and cannot use the phone because I have a phobia of talking in real-time to people I cannot see (online I at least am able to check what has just been said to me to make sure I'm not repeating myself).

I don't have any family living near me, and of my two closest (geographically) friends, one is disabled herself and the other works full-time.

Kriss, you really are being naive. Also, I'm only 22 - it isn't only older people who find themselves in such positions, and it's actually easier for pensioners to get help in these circumstances, because the government expect such things in older people and cater a lot better for them than for young disabled people.
Homosexual, Unitarian, young, British, female, disabled. Do you need more?

But your mother must have been paying her utility bills for herself all her life, before DDs were invented. I bet she'd not be too thrilled to hear that she's not savvy enough to go to the Post Office and pay an electricity bill. Come on!

Do you not have a social worker or community mental nurse?
