I think its a very very Scottish thing aliasojo, no one I know who isn't Scottish would ever consider such a thing! Personally it doesn't bother me much, two of my front windows have white and two, red, and some of my neighbours matching windows look a bit "chavvy". But I do remember when I was little, all my family and neighbours having matching nets!

I'm from the west country :D
  • Mine has to match! and I'm not scottish.
Well shall I say the front has to match, at the moment I have vertical blinds and dress curtains. But over the years I've had roller blinds (didn't like those and they did not last long) Nets (hated those too, kept thinking of all the dust that was sat on them!) and now I have vertical blinds. I have 2 large bay windows (up and downstairs) a small bedroom window and a porch window. These all match with the blinds and every time I change the blinds to nets they all have to change.

But strangley I don't bother the same with the back, no one sees it I suppose!

Well clearly the answer to that is yes. :rotfl:I (and loads of people I know, so I'm not the only one, lol) all feel a house is smarter looking if it's 'dressed' the same way.

As for the curtains, imo they can't be seen in the same way from outside so no, they don't need to match.

The light thing isn't too much of an issue imo as I can just get blackout liners for the curtains, we had good ones when our daughter was little and they were very effective so OH can have his darkness either way.

    Um...you have blinds AND curtains?

    Now I'm even more confused.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • coming in from an interior designer point of view - yes it does look better from the outside to have a uniform look to the front windows of a house... and it's pretty easy to do... I have slatted venetians inside the recess of my window frames (so from the outside they all look the same), then rollers just infront of the slats and then curtains on the outside of the recess... every room has the same slat size and colour but not every window furnishing is the same colour on the inside - I have a red, black and white room (Master), blue and white room (Son's room), Rose pink lounge and passage, and apple green room (spare).

And having an argument about your furnishings is good - shows you both have different idea's but always remember to compromise! :)

Your husband has mentioned that the blinds he wants in the bedroom block out more light, which is very practical, and some people need their sleeping space to be dark or wake very early.

I have to wear a sleep mask in a bedroom with venetian blinds as they never block the light out. I would never have them in a bedroom.

It has never occured to me to have matching curtains/blinds at every window, but I don't know anyone who would notice/judge something like that. I find different rooms need different window dressings anyway. E.g. I have black out curtains in my bedroom so I can sleep, but my living room is quite dark so I have light thin curtains in there.

Probably all of you who have matching blinds but are not Scottish, have Scottish ancestry in your blood lines somewhere. You have to get your good taste from somewhere. ;):D

Ah but the Irish and the Scots are similar in taste...you have Irish dancing, we have Scottish dancing, both can be from a similar mould.

The English have Morris dancing. Enough said. :rotfl:

I'm kidding before you all get your knickers in a twist. :D

You could have the venetian blinds and then have blackout liners on your curtains...;)

Good marriages are made of compromises on the things that don't really matter all that much.:D
