Well your post really pulled the rug from under the feet of that one didn't it!
  • I can't believe I didn't think of this before! Not many plots of land lying around in London mind, but I'm sure it will be ok if I start building myself a nice shack in Hyde Park. I've never done any DIY, but I've seen some TV programmes where people paint feature walls and make their own cushions so that should suffice.
    They are an EYESORES!!!!

    Excellent. You've done very well.

TBH there's not many travellers who can make the transition that quickly. ;)

Do what I did buy some land work you n@ts off and build a house yourself.

It`s difficult, bloody hard work but emminently possible.

The benefits are spectacular,ie mortgage free or as close as to it as possible.

There is no end of information freely available including ready made plans which can be modified to suit your own needs.

I did it and built a 5 bed 3 bath home over a period of 3 years while living in a caravan with two young kids.

It was sheer murder with days without sleep and working two jobs at once but if I did it plenty of other similarly motivated people can do too.

    Stop moaning start doing!!!!

This forum has descended into little more than a Daily Mail circle j@rk off party and people should be ashamed to display such envy of others in a better position.

Are you on the glue again?

Have one on me. I imported some from Belgium. Not quite the real thing, but from a casual glance you'd never know. :A

    Is this a joke?

OK, sure, it might be possible. But really, I'd rather rent than do a bodge job on building a house that I built myself! There is no way I would be able to do it properly myself, and I don't know ANY builders, plumbers OR electricians who could help me...

Also, where on earth do I buy land from that I can actually build on? I think I am right in saying that land is usually a third of the price of a new build development, so say a house I wanted to build would be worth 300k (I think if I was going to build it myself I would want to build a decent sized one!), that means I need to first have 100k to build with. Then I would need to somehow buy all the building materials and then plod on building, and no doubt making several mistakes along the way costing me thousands of man hours.

No thanks, I'll just rent until I can afford to buy. Cheers for the idea though.

funny you say that - someone on here (can't remember who it was) reckons that it costs only £12k to build a house
