Why all the anguish about renting?

A total fantasist more like. There seems to be what they call a 'disconnect' in old headcone's philosophy. On this thread he comes across like a rabid Thatcherite on crack cocaine, elsewhere he's a dyed in the wool, capitalist bashing, bleeding heart Labourite.
Cognitive dissonance, perhaps?0 -
“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

Your housing acumen is clear Nembot.
You can now bathe in the status of 'housing guru', congratulations
Use your new found position of power wisely.
I'd suggest finding a fresh new patch of forum thread. Self build a 'I'm right coz I don't rent' intro. Sit back and watch those renters of lower intellectual capacity bow to your superior ability.
What the fook are you talking about?0 -
What a very, very peculiar thread...
Is headcone Hamish's teenage son, I wonder? Or Hamish when he's had a few? I think we should be told.0 -
I'm just disappointed at people who believe they can tell others what they should do, just because they were lucky with houses. What the fook are you talking about?
It comes across as arrogant.
(Not a dig at you, btw).
Where's the harm in trying to understand on here that not everyone's circumstances are the same?
I was lucky in buying at a good time. It wasn't down to any skill.
Headcone seems to think everyone should self-build, because he did. I can't see much mileage in that policy if you live in London say.0 -

a bit like lottery winners suggesting everyone just pick their six numbers every week ("it worked for me").Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

Wow, this thread sure has descended into a load of rubbish. I was hoping for a decent response from headcone to say exactly how and why I should build my own home... Instead he just appears to be calling anyone who disagrees with him a loser.
I was hoping for some new insight that I had missed

If you want to see some self builds, head for West Wales. There, in Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire you will see a lot of property that has been constructed on individual plots over the past 20 years or so. There's still some going on, but with prices falling, there's been a slow down. Ordinary plots cost £65 - 85k, on average.
Individually, the houses are not bad at all, but the way they have often been built, in ribbon developments following the major roads, does no one any favours. Some 'villages' are about two miles long with no easily discernable centre and no apparent overall plan, so some even 'drift' into the next one. This is in a place of low population density. Styles are, of course, whatever floats the self-builder's boat and there are a fair number of gin palaces......Many retired relocators from the South East live in them now.
I'm not saying this is worse than what Persimmon & Barratt cook up for the masses - that could hardly happen - but I'm glad we haven't gone so far down that route here.
There's certainly mileage in the idea of kit houses, put together by keen home-builders with occasional support from skilled trades to keep costs down, but I think that might be some way from the average self build, or what the OP had in mind.0
