You are really something arn't you - do you realise how spiteful that comment is about wanting to get a family member in to save a few quid.

I have three children the youngest two are disabled, one with a life threatening illess which means he could die at anytime without warning. I had to give up my job to care for my children, and i took on the role of not only being their mum but being their carer too - fulltime 24hrs a day. I don't get respite etc and what i do get of this government is £55 a week to look after my children, that it.
If was an outside agency who came in to look after my children 24hrs a day(which is the care they need) they would get far more than that.

When i take my kids out for the day on the rare occasions that i can, i have to push a disabled buggy plus carry all their equipment that they both need, i have to give them meds at a certain time, have to make sure they are okay all the time, checking everything is in order - my day out isn't relaxing or fun its damn hard work and for a place to offer me free enterance is a great thing.

I'm not saying that chester zoo are in the wrong here thats not my argument, any discount is good. What i do take offence is that i should have to pay because i'm a family member not just some joe blogs who works for the social and gets paid to look after my children.
Most parents have to look after their children disabled or not.
Its not always an enjoyable day out for parents who take children out because they are watching them constantly, having to feed them, water them, take them to the toilet.

Its not a competition on who has the hardest job now is it? And we all take care of our children no matter what.

People would go to the Zoo if they were taking one child who is able bodied and two children who are disabled.....what difference does it make if the parent has to pay?

Why should the carer get a place for free when the disabled person is claiming carers element of DLA ....which pays for things like that?

Ive seen it lots of times.....people get all bent out of shape because they cant get a free place......but the same people would have taken that sister/brother/parent/aunt with them anyway.

But you would have these costs anyway be it chester zoo or a day out shopping with a carer, the only additional cost here is that of the entrance fee for the carer which is £15 and reasonably charged in my opinion.

Sh1305 - I don't understand why you only get low rate care if you need the level of care that you describe??

You do that with a non-disabled 9 year old, do you?

DLA isn't (believe it or not!) an unlimited supply of money that people get by just asking for it.

More like 5 weeks of money goes on equipment at least several times a year. A lot more than one weeks money would need to pay for me and a carer to go to the zoo - food, entrance fee, etc.
You would always have had to pay for food.....and train fares and hourly carer rates etc etc.

The only thing that is different is the entrance fee......£15. Less than one weeks care money.

I cant believe you, and others like you, begrudge paying out £15 to pay your 'carer' (who would most likely be a friend or relative more often than not anyway) into a day out because of principle.

    How pathetic.

How many parents do you know who do not look after their 9 year olds? They constantly have to watch them to make sure they are safe and dont get lost. They need feeding. Etc. Who doesnt watch their children 24 hours a day at that age?

I know what DLA is. I know that there is a carers element, which is the part I am talking about. What does that have to do with your unrelated comments? Are you all here?

As a non disabled person, YOU can go by yourself. As a disabled person, I CAN'T go by myself. Therefore, I'm at least £20 out of pocket.

No, that's what DLA is there for.

As many people will tell you, DLA doesn't go that far.
