Yes, I can understand that too, what a wasy to spend 8hrs a day.

In general folks do forget the unnerving 1st few times when learning and should be more "understanding". No need for blarring horns the big red letterL should give enough warning ;)

On the subject of the quality of DI's. I thought it was only me that had noticed. Only last week I pulled up behing a learner at a set of temp lights. When it was the learners turn to move off he/she stalled, still 10 yds behind the "wait here" sign. The lights were red before the driver got going and yet the instructer had the driver past and through the red light.:eek::eek: Genuinely Gob Smacked.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

I think that is proof enough sassy-one is a troll.

As for learner drivers I give them as much room as they need. When I was learning to drive in the early 90's I saw allsorts. One that sticks in my mind was an inpatient driver, tailgating me, then aggressively overtaking whilst flicking two fingers at us lol

My instructor accidentally tested the "scarlet L" theory that Drivers get really aggressive or lack understanding round learners one day:

He forgot to put the L plates on the car when I got in (yes, I should have checked too). I drove around like a learner and did a number of learner things and got no aggression from other drivers.

About halfway through the lesson he realised and put the L plates on. The second half of the lesson I was doing better (or so my instructor said) and yet i had lots of annoyed drivers beeping at me, pulling out aggressively to get round me etc.

Drivers do react to the L plates and take other lanes, overtake for little reason and get generally annoyed with L plated cars even if they are driving ok. I have even told hubby off because we have been in the car once or twice and he said "ah, there is a learner in the right lane, guess I'll take the left then"... He soon stopped doing that!
  • There are certain road users that many drivers assume will get in their way, and they'll drive dangerously to get past - from my own experience cyclists and learners are treated as mere obstructions.

It was amusing when I was training for a motorcycle licence to see drivers pull alongside us at the lights only to be left standing when the lights went green (we weren't racing - even a gently ridden 500cc bike is dramatically quicker off the line than most cars) - of course they'd catch up again if we were in a 30 and try to bully us into the gutter. Idiots.

Most drivers assume L-Plates = Slow rubbish driver ahead.

You will get people just assume whatever speed your going is too slow and overtake irrespective of the conditions...

Can't exactly see whats wrong with 80 MPH on a dual carriageway from an ADI though - 80 is hardly dangerous where conditions allow.

Still have fond memories of doing my CBT on a 50cc scooter, it was a Peugeot Speedfight which had a top speed of 35 (yes, the bike they gave me to do my test on didn't actually have a limiter, it was just !!!! slow...!), and the instructor / other person doing their test were both on 125cc bikes... queue me having to rag the !!!! out of the bike just to keep up...!

I wouldn't make a learner driver feel uncomfortable, there is no need for tailgating or horn blowing. I don't see a problem with actively avoiding one though, like choosing a lane that isn't occupied by a learner driver. They will after all naturally be travelling slowly and will generally be more likely to make mistakes than a qualified driver.
  • There are alot of idiots on the roads these days OP so I wouldnt take it personally.

You dont just experience this being a L driver

I have always treat other drivers as idiots so always expect the unexpected I realise obviously new drivers will therefore drive more cautiously and rightly so

I try to cut new L drivers some slack we all been there once I never understand certain peoples desire to get to a place at quickest time possible, I am not a slow driver by any means when on open road but I drive at a safe speed depending on road and conditions

I've had my license for 6 years now but I remember being a learner so I never tailgate them and give them the same respect I give to other non-audi/bmw drivers on the road. It really annoys me when people cut learners up and give them no respect, if you cut them up and they're on a test you could cause them to fail.

I remember when I passed my test, my instructor was driving me home and some bmw driver was tailgating him on a 40 road and then started pulling out to overtake, and my instructor put his foot down and zoomed up to 65 leaving the guy miles behind! Would have like to have seen his face!
