I was hesitant about starting my diary, as I paid my mortgage off a couple of years ago, but there was no where else to do it. The pensions board and the savings board didn't feel quite right, and everybody here had the same mindset as me, so I took the plunge.

It's the best thing I could have done, everybody is so supportive, and I'm inspired by everybody's diaries.

I hope you carry on posting - if you go to your very first post, I think you can rename your diary, so you could call it something more appropriate for your new situation:)

    Thanks Goldie,

it is inspiring to have a diary amongst like minded folks. I don't always understand what some folk are doing financially but I do like to read other's MS ideas ;).

OH and I have about 6 and 7 years respectively to reach official retirement age. I think when OH finishes work next month he will effectively be retired. This means we'll be relying on my ability to make money from my self employment until we get our pensions :eek:. Am not too fazed by this as have been SE for about 20 years, the only thing that concerns me is if I was to be ill and unable to earn in this period we'd be in the clarts!

Therefore I'm keen to build up the savings both to help in retirement but also to be a buffer if there is a gap in my earnings. So, keeping on with my diary will hopefully keep me focussed on this aim.

The month seems to be whizzing past eek. We've opened 2 S@nt@nder 123 accounts to start savings in. One for OH and one joint acct for my savings. OH already had an account with them - it used to be an Alliance & Leicester one and I've got a business account which also used to be A&L. They let us know v quickly online that our application was successful so am guessing its because of existing accounts :D. So far we've had 17 letters from them with various cards, info and part PINS

So my job for Wednesday is to try and work out which letter relates to which card and then to activate them and change the PINS - such fun and we can then get some money in there.

Weather not been great here for a few days now - verryyy windy and everything not nailed down has been blown about. One of my plant pots had the contents ripped out by the wind . The leaves on my poor bean plants have gone all crumply and wind damaged - the flowers aren't looking great on it so wonder if I'll get any beans. It feels very autumnal now and quite cold here so summer seems very far away. Its hard to believe that earlier in the week I was enjoying watching loads of butterflys on the Buddlea [sp?] and lovely big yellow bumble bees on the corn flowers - nothing flying about today except garden furniture :rotfl:

Today been a housekeeping type of day with cleaning, washing and shopping. Also went out for b'fast with OH as he was away for a couple of days with work so not seen him much. Been to a few things at the Festival this week but nothing planned now until week after next as work busy this coming week.

Am sure there's more to report but too tired to remember now, am off to bed as early start tomorrow. Have a good week everyone x

ooh yes just remembered Swedish shop apologetic over terrible service and said they'd send a courier to collect extra covers and send a £40 gift card to make up for major inconvenience. Covers collected but no gift card as yet so will chase that if its not here by end of week............

I'm secretly relieved that the weather has changed, it was far too warm & humid for me :o

I need to get my backside into gear & look at changing to a better savings account. We had a letter at the weekend to say our piddling interest rate is going down even further!! Might have a look at the 123 account as I've seen that mentioned in other diaries. Ridiculous about the 17 letters though!!

I'm wanting to get our mortgage below £30k (even if it's £29,999) & then save, save, save as much as possible for future plans ;)

    Have a good week.

Hi Poppy, it was v hot and unpleasant indeed but I think its gone a bit toooo far the other way here - have had the heating on a couple of times its been so nippy, seems far too early for that.

Savings rates are ridiculously low now, we've had the 'we've reviewed your interest rate letter' too and its never a review upwards these days.

How near to the £30000 are you now? 'Future plans' sounds exciting, I like a plan or two

Errk not been back for ages - my bad :o. Not so far to get below £30k Poppy, its such a good feeling when it goes down to the next 'decade'. Hope you are enjoying the beans on toast :rotfl:.

Its weird here on the money front. We opened the 123 accounts and got a CC which gets cashback. I'm so used to not using a credit card and paying for food etc in cash that I'm struggling to use a credit card again. The MSE message is very well ingrained!

Had a quiet weekend, today has mostly been admin of which there was lots, some of it for work - long form to fill in :(. Went to Mr A y'day to stock up for the week, nothing to come on the Price Guarantee but did have a voucher to spend from last shop. Also put a bag of food into the food bank collection point. I guess its win win for Mr A to have a collection point in the store. Makes them look good and folk buy food in there to donate ;).

OH finally finishes work this coming week, he is v ambivalent and worried about it but we'll see what happens. I'm away for a few days with ma sis end of next week - looking v forward to the break, been ages.

Nice tea tonight - nothing fancy, I had baked salmon and OH had lamb leg steaks done on his grill pan. We had mushroom rice with it and a friend gave us some beetroot off her lotty. I roasted it which took aggeees as they are BIG but it was yum. The green beans are nearly ready in the garden so we'll have some this week.

Am heading off to bed now as early start tomorrow so hope everyone has a good week and I'll try and post more often :o but as I'll be away it won't be before end of next week. Night all

Had a lovely time away relaxing by the sea up in the Highlands. The weather was hot too which was a bonus. Cold and misty at home! We saw a few rellies and chilled out so just what was needed.

Need to have a look at the accounts tomorrow and get my head round shuffling money in and out so that we still meet all the criteria for cashback etc. Still finding it difficult to spend money on a CC

Been a funny old day, after work was supposed to go to Chiro appointment but got a phone call to say there was a tick on the cat's neck  In all the years we've had cats never had this problem. Cancelled the Chiro and booked vet appt. Had to get a taxi there and back as no one around who could help :p. Vet said ticks on cats seemed to be more common this year and he'd removed them from 3 cats today. I didn't know how to do it and would be worried about making things worse but the vet made it look easy. Cat not impressed with being held still and climbed on his basket hissing away! Came out nearly £30 lighter plus taxi fares but peace of mind that the horrid thing is gone now - poor boy. Bought a tick hook thingy in case and cat had some anti flea and tick stuff on the back of his neck. Not a fan of it really but even less of a tick fan so will use it for a couple of months.

Huge spider running around tonight - we seem to have loads at the moment but this was mega. Caught it under a glass and put it outside [shudders] it had big eyes on stalks aaargh. Not a fan when they are that size. So that's my brush with wildlife for the day :rotfl:.

Getting a dry cut tomorrow morning, shuffling money and then going into work for 2 meetings in the evening. If the timing works with the train I'll go to JL and get my free cake and drink first
