That was scary; now to tackle the remaining mortgage

:j:j:jWell, we've been and gone and done it and are now mortgage free :j:j:j all paid off on Monday :j:j
I rang the Halif@x and got a redemption figure then as planned we both took money out of our previous year's ISA online [still some left in there] and I did an online payment and it was gone:beer: !!
Have to say it feels a bit weird and hasn't really sunk in yet. I looked at the online banking to see if the mortgage bit had a '0' figure but no, it had completely disappeared . I guess that means it really has gone .
Apparently we get confirmation in writing from the bank after a couple of weeks and they inform the Land Registry that they don't have an interest in the property and we get the deeds posted out.
OH is really pleased its gone as he's leaving work in about 6 weeks. Think we'll be concentrating next on saving though not sure how fast that'll happen if we are living on my variable earnings but it'll be an adventure that's for sure.
It will feel strange to not have a payment of over £600 going out next month. Think we might also cancel the life insurance as we have no dependants or debt now and that'll be a bit less to find every month.
I've got 2 weeks off now and am very much looking forward to the break and a few days out here and there. Going to a gig on Sunday which should be good. We had half a bottle of champagne yesterday to celebrate my hols and being MF . Yum, the champers were a pressie to OH on his recent big birthday.
Have a good w/e everyone, dreich with haar here but no storms at least.0 -

Thanks for that Poppy. We have managed to pay off the mortgage in 9 years and 10 months instead of 15 years which is pretty good going. We were due to still be paying it when OH was a year into retirement. How things change; the Govt. have moved the pension age further away and OH has given up work anyway and I'd be surprised if he got another job now
When I started this diary in August '10 we still owed almost £52000 and it felt then like we'd never get to the end of it. But here we are MF and waiting for it to sink in properly0 -

We'll done - fantastic news.
Your DH is definitely doing the right thing,my DH also not happy at work but with children & mortgage he just carries on whilst we try & pay off mortgage as quickly as we can. Luckily over the last few months he has managed to stop being such a workaholic & is trying to get more of a work/life balance. It has taken a while but we are getting there

Congratulations on your mortgage free status !Apparently we get confirmation in writing from the bank after a couple of weeks and they inform the Land Registry that they don't have an interest in the property and we get the deeds posted out.
I used to work for the Halifax, and that's exactly what'll happen.
Even though the Deeds aren't the valuable documents they once were, they are still nice to have. When I repaid my mortgage in 2011, they sent deeds by signed for post, so expect a knock on the door in about 3 weeks time!Early retired - 18th December 2014

Thanks Mfwin, getting the balance right can be tricky and its hard when you have children as well but hope your OH continues to manage it.0
