It works in Spain, and has in Italy.

What neither of those countries do, is fill their mid table and bottom feeders with unknown and/or average foreign players.

Rooney, Gerrard, Terry, Cole playing against Torres, Ronaldo, Tevez, Vidic, Vermaelen etc etc will only make them better players and improve Englands team, but playing against Gael Givet, Ludovic Silvestre, Mamady Sidebe or Marek Cech does nothing for them.
there's a big difference - both the Spanish and Italian leagues don't have the brand to go with the national teams.

Brand England is a business entity in itself - look at who they've had as Chief Execs of the FA - Crozier and Palios for example. all business men.

There is no reason for the Premier League or the Championship to be worried about attendance or ticket prices, they are the 5th and 9th most attended domestic league competitions of any sport in the world, according to Wikipedia.

That suggests ticket prices arent necessarily a problem in the econimcs sense, its just very annoying for people who cant regularly afford them, myself included.

hmmmm, I think england do have decent enough footballers. What concerns me, is player power. It got scolari the sack at chelsea, & probably did for benitez.

Look at the ongoing behaviour by terry, cole, lampard, e4t al. The great debate about who should be captain - lampard? cheat. Gerrard? Assaults people. Ferdinand? Missed drugs test. Cole? too dodgy a character.

Player power has a lot to answer for. 7 players, including carragher (who fabio personally requested come out of retirement) all went to him to tell him they disagreed with him.

The squad we took appeared to be full of capello making concessions. He said no unfit players (barry). Look at the squad. We had 2 left footers in 23. No wonder we were unbalanced.
Capello should've stuck to his guns, & told pretty much everyone to run & jump. He's in charge, he drops who he wants, & you play his system.

The players take vast sums of money, but little/no responsibility. Move on, lets look for some better quality like adam johnson, or the lad albrighton at villa.
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

Sorry but I have to rant whenever football and money creep up!! Not exactly on topic and I do apologise!!

I strongly object to the ridiculous amounts of money paid to players and clubs. How can anyone justify the amounts paid for just playing a game (ie it does not matter if the game goes ahead, they win, or they lose?). People on that sort of money should be those that bring benefit to society directly such as those who save lives etc... what an odd society we live in where people who play games get more than those who save lives and run whole countries!

The recent England performance proves that these players live the life first and play football secondly (or thirdly!). Their mind is fixated on their next exotic holiday, fast car or wag girlfriend.

I would personally not want to feel I've contributed to these wages at all, which is why I don't subscribe to Sky, or go to football matches. I know people feel pationately about football and that's fine that they feel the need to pay their hard earned money to the players with their season tickets etc

Oh no it's the usual tripe. Soldiers and nurses are heroes, footballers are villains, yea yea we get it.

Footballers are entertainers and they pay what people think they're worth, just like musicians, actors, artists etc

As for attendances well Sky, without doubt, is the biggest factor affecting them. The current financial climate is no doubt forcing more peeps to pick and choose their games and some games just don't make sense for most people. Man City played Spurs at dinner time at white hart lane last week, tickets were 48 quid. To get form Manchester to Spurs for that time you have to set off very early or stay the nite before, then you've got to get all the way back, which will no doubt cost money and take a lot out of you. Now do you go that huge effort or do you get a lie in and watch the game on sky?

Really2 I doubt any club has a waiting list of 5 years. Man united supposedly had a huge waiting list but that has soon evaporated after a poor season and they haven't sold their season tickets out for this season yet. I know tottenham have a waiting list partly because of their small stadium but I doubt any other clubs have waiting lists at all, let alone ones for 5 years. At least not ones of any substance anwyay

Nah, 7th, the spending (£20M for an injured Aquilani!!) on some poor players, but the major one I would say is guaranteeing 4th.

He had 6 years, not bad by recent standards.

Football is getting more expensive to attend in person, especially when there may be an option to see on the telly (even if just the highlights)
That said, if there are nsold seats then the clubs should be looking at that lost revenue and all the other costs such as pies, programmes etc and consider lowering the price to increase the revenue

Part of the problem. Expectation & player power means managers don't always get the time they need.

Merlin the Magician has entered his 5th year as manager recently. I think there are only 3 prem managers who have been in post longer than he. That is bloomin shocking!

Look at clubs like Wigan, Blackburn and Bolton, where they have significant parts of the stadium empty. Birmingham struggled selling tickets all last year, in spite of what they acheived.

Then the question is why there is not enough sold.
Presumably because the price is too high.

I went to watch my team play in Europe (Germany) and was shocked at how low the ticket prices were.
The ticket price was something like £7 for a European game

I suspect that is partly to do with how the club is organised & financed. German clubs are structured very differently to ours, I believe fan ownership plays a part in how the clubs are run.
