very timely. i was half way though reading the GWTDT when i got the audio book. pity it doesn't have chapter stops as i would love to move easily back and forth from audio to visual. also missing are the 'domestic violence quotes that open major section breaks. i wonder if the paid for versions are the same??

the ian banks one does have chapter stops. started that today in the car.

thank you so much everyone. your comments were invaluable. i have tried audible before and couldn't get it to work. didn't realise i had to download their software. silly me.
  • All 7 books look great & will keep me occupied onthe train for several months I think!

    Thanks
  • Brilliant! Thanks!
  • Ugh. I've been thinking about using Audible for ages but was always put off by the 'sign up now, cancel later' nature of doing it on the cheap.

Having had the chance to try it for free, I doubt I'll ever use it again.

Lowish bitrate audio and DRM-crippled to hell - what is wrong with unprotected mp3 ?

I use an iPod Nano, but managed with Media Monkey (iTunes is too bloated for my taste and old machine), so I'm screwed on several fronts - if I set it up for 'Apple' format, I'd need to use iTunes and if I set it up for 'mp3' then the Nano isn't on the device list.

Thanks for whoever suggested googling the conversion process. I did have a look but it was far too faffy to bother with (failed at the first step with a Windows error when trying to install a file).

I think I'll stick to buying spoken word on CD so I can choose how to convert it & what device I can use the converted files on.

Unless anyone knows of a decent, DRM-free audiobook vendor ?
  • Forgot to mention, burning to CD & re-ripping as mp3 would actually degrade the sound quality even further.
  • Swines !

If you google, 'drm free audiobooks', audible comes up first on the list.

Sounds like false advertising to me.
