easyJet or Ryanair

Am stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea. Planning a weekend break to Barcelona next Jan/Feb to visit friends (who'll be putting us up). We are 2 adults & 2 kids. Ryanair is £151 and easyJet is £207.

I loathe Ryanair as I think they are sneaky, but have always had a soft spot for easyJet. I used to live in Barcelona and flew them countless times without bother. But is it worth an extra £50 for a weekend break?

Also to consider, bearing in mind we are flying next year, is that easyJet are cancelling flights all over and Ryanair keep putting up the cost of hold luggage (currently £7 per suitcase each way).

  • ryanair no way worked for them would never reccomend them!

  • If you book it online its £3.50 per suitcase EW.If its only a weekend you may get away with hand luggage
It depends on flight times whether the £50 is worth it as you would have to get from Girona to Barcelona if flying with ryanair
  • Hi i have just come back from Venice today booked flights with Ryanair and i feel like i just do NOT want to fly with them again!

I personally would rather fly with easyjet having used them before.

They are sneaky and charge extra for luggage! £5.00 on line and £7.00 at the airport.

If its a short flight and you pay for the extra luggage on line then if its a short flight then i suppose make do with them as £50 is quite a lot of money for a wkend away?

    hth.

I have used both companies several times and have been happy with both.
Now for me it depends on several things. I usually fly to Barcelona, and even though ryanair leaves you in Girona the one-hour coach trip afterwards is ok. Plus transport is by far much cheaper in Spain, so a difference of £50 in the plane ticket is worth considering. You'll never spend that on a coach in Spain.
I am flying there again in October and will use ryanair again. I will be spending much more money to go to and from the airport in UK than for the flight itself. One thing to think about is how much weight you intend to carry, because luggage allowances in ryanair are smaller.
If I really, really want to have it smoother because I am carrying a lot of stuff, I choose easyjet because they leave you direct in Bcn airport. But smaller airports work better. The last time I decided to use BA and flew London-Bcn and... it was a disaster. No food on the plane, got given a couple of crappy tickets to use in the airport cafes before taking off, then both planes to go and to come were delayed... and my scalp got some sort of allergy from the seat. Eeeeeeecks! I used to have a very different image of BA! Times change, no doubt.

  • I think you've already hit on a couple of things which mean the difference is not really £56:

    1) The number of bags times two (there and back) times £3.50 for your checked luggage.
    2) Any cost of transferring from Girona with Ryanair compared to Barcelona with Easyjet.

Then it boils down to whether you mind the extra time for the journey from Girona.

I used to rank these airlines the same but recently I have gone off Ryanair and will tend to choose Easyjet.

Yes, there you are spot on. But I've never had to pay that before with ryanair unless there was overweight. And I tend to travel light whenever I can.

The cost is not so different. Still, it will be slightly cheaper to go to Bcn from Bcn airport (bus or train) than from Girona airport(coach), of course.

Well, it's one hour of coach from Girona to one of the main coach stations. It's half an hour by train from Bcn airport to the city centre. Or the trip from hell by bus, which can be done in as much time as traffic jams want.

I admit I tend to consider easyjet slightly better quality. Although when I try to say why I can't quite specify any reasons.
I hope it will still be so after october!

Should have mentioned that we're being picked up from either airport so don't need to take that cost into consideration. Flight times with Ryanair are more convenient and can fly from Blackpool which is a bit closer than Liverpool. Unfortunately it looks like Ryanair has the edge.

Can't see anywhere to pre-book the checked baggage on-line and therefore get it for £3.50. Wondered if we could get away with hand luggage. Possibly not with 2 little ones - aged 5 & 2. But could probably get it all in one bag weighing less than 15kg.

It should also be the smaller size of suitcase, otherwise even if it is not heavy you will have to check it in.

Have you tried pricing the trip with Jet2.com ?

They fly to your destination from a few northern airports and I have always found them to be a better experiance than either Ryanair or Easyjet .
