Please avoid both of them and pass the warning on to any others you know considering putting a catflap through glass. Let's hope trading standards catch up with them soon.

On a related topic, think carefully before spending a fortune on an expensive catflap. I bought one that was supposed to read microchips - which consistently failed to detect one of my cats.
I replaced it with a high-tech tag based one which works beautifully but I can't use it because my timid rescue moggy runs away from the unlocking sound!

As a result I have one expensive catflap in a box in the corner and one fitted but permanently unlocked. The consequence? I've ended up adopting two local strays! 4 cats and counting :rotfl:

When the flaps work they're great, but do check them out thoroughly before buying. If possible find one locally and make sure you can return it if it doesn't work out for you.

Sending strokes to all the other beloved and spoilt rotten felines out there... :D

Thanks for all the information regarding this topic and "realistic" quotes I should be expecting.

A quick Google does bring up that CatFlapFitter webpage. To be honest, just LOOKING at that mess of a website, I would never have parted with my money. My 12 year old nephew could have knocked up a more professional looking site!

Hope he gets what's coming to him. Thanks to the legit posters.

    Hi,

I took in a stray cat a few months ago and have been looking into getting her a cat flap fitted, in the internal sliding double glazed door between the conservatory & the lounge. At the moment she uses a window but it means keeping the door into the lounge open as well (not too happy about it all being accessible overnight), hence was going to get a cat flap fitted in that door. I'm gobsmacked at the potential cost though !

Only other way I can think to do it is keep the door open but close the window and have the cat flap in the brickwork, in the conservatory itself. Would this be more viable ? Estimate on cost ? Haven't even looked at a flap that would need to allow access through about 11" of brick (a tunnel !) - how would that compare with one that goes through glass (about £16) ?

I'm in Berkshire, if that's any use.

    Thanks

I have used this solution in a couple of houses where catflaps in glazed doors were not practical, and it worked very well. Yes, you have to create a tunnel through the brickwork and you can choose to site your catflap at either end of it. You fix it just as you would to an opening in a door, only using the appropriate masonery drills and screws. We found it worked best if the flap was stationed at the indoor end of the tunnel, as the cats seemed happier to come through a tunnel towards a flap, rather than open a flap into a dark space. They soon got the idea.
  • Hi mynameis*,
Someone in this thread mentioned that Michael the Catflapman had a video of his work. I can't remember where to find it (but it's here in the thread somewhere). I watched that video and in there Michael shows how he installs a catflap through a brick wall. I don't know prices or pros and cons but it might be worth giving him a call. I still haven't called him out to my house; I'll probably now wait until it gets colder before splashing out on yet more extravagant kit for my incredibly spoiled rotten kitties. :) Good luck!
  • You are not alone. Shall we get Rogue Traders involved?
  • We have also been conned! We are in Hampshire.
  • Sarah. We travel all over the North West. I have mailed you a private message.

:rotfl:Hi I live in Wirral Merseyside, i read your msg about traveling all over North West to fit cat flaps in double glazed glass doors, do you cover my area? :)

I'm not really one for going on these message boards because of privacy fears etc but I just had to pop on here to say to anyone who is thinking of using Jacksons in Manchester that you will have no problems. I rang them 2 weeks ago to get a cat flap sorted for my cat but the guy that people talk about (Julian) was on Holiday so the secretary put me through to a guy called Andrew. Andrew talked me through the process and I was happy to give them the work. I am a few miles away from them and they charged me £26 to come out and measure up the unit which I didn't know how to do myself. The unit with a hole in costed £143. They then came back a week later and fitted the unit for another £26. At £200 it was not as cheap as I thought it would be but I am VERY happy with the service I received from Jacksons. Going off what another user said I paid by Credit Card just in case there were any problems because they require payment up front but there wasn't a single problem. I would recommend this company to anyone. I'm just glad that I don't live near that Con Man some of you have mentioned. To be honest I'm not an actaul Cat lover but this is my partners House and if she is happy then so am I. My only advice would be to pay by cheque or card but judging by what others have said and also my experience I think anyone who buys off this company will be satisfied.
