Thanks Annie, well I haven't had much luck with the car so far. About a month ago, I had a chipped windscreen, got it repaired with autoglass for £10, which was fine. Then 2 weeks ago, I went to my brothers. I have a visitors parking permit but they were doing some road works on my brothers road, so I parked further up, not looking at the sign! Totally my own fault and a lesson I will never forget. My car had been towed away as you can only park in that bit for half an hour but, not looking and reading, I assumed it was fine as it was still on the same road as my brothers. Shock, horror I paid £240 to get it back. And now this. They say it comes in 3's so hopefully that will be the end of it. I do have a turkish eye in my car but hhmm might look on ebay for a chineese lucky charm lol. I didn't know that I could refuse the offer for the write off. I did see another mechanic today and he told me the complete opposite, he said the car doesn't need a new bumper as the cracks can be filled in and were the bumper has dropped down a bit on the right side, that could be pushed up. He said the car would cost a few hundred to get it repaired. It's hard to know who to trust and believe. I think I will stop asking mechanics and just stick to Tesco's company for now. Im just worried it could take a few months before anything happens.

When my car was hit from behind on a motorway, I was a bit worried about forking out for the excess but since the other party was to blame, the excess came from their side. I was only third party fire & theft at the time and my insurance company was good enough to arrange recovery (which they wouldn't have normally done for TPF&T) because I was like 100 miles away from home and it was like -10.

I've not read over this thread so I'm sure this has already been mentioned but if you haven't already, get a personal injury claim in. It'll cost you nothing if you have legal cover and you derserve to be compensated for this situation. My insurance company referred my case to a local solicitor and it was all settled in two months.

Thanks for your advice ElkyElky. Basically I don't have the money to pay the excess. The reason my excess is high is due to me being a new driver, so I would have to pay the full £550. My car would get repaired before the other drivers insurer accepts liability, which would mean I would have to pay up but once liability has been accepted, then I would get the money refunded or credited back. But it's the summer holidays, I am skint as it is and can't get that kind of money together, so I have to wait for the driver to accept liability. Then my car will be picked up by the company that work for Tesco. I did get a call from Tesco today who then put me through to a solicitor and she went trhough all the details with me and said she will send me the paper work.

That must of been awful on the motorway, I was stationary when we got hit from behind. I think the shock has gone from me now but I do feel a bit nervous thinking about having to drive again.

They haven't admitted liability yet? I can't imagine there would be anything to dispute considering you were hit from behind. I always thought getting hit from behind would make the third party automatically liable. Think of it this way... it wouldn't have happened if the other driver kept the correct distance according to the highway code and had been paying attention.

In my situation, I had a tailgator behind me on the motorway (the first time I had driven on the motorway) while I was strictly sticking to the speed limit, then I had to brake because of black ice. Within a blink of the eye, the rear of my car was completely destroyed and was written off. All it takes is one idiot to ignore the stopping distance specified in the highway code.

Since it happened, I've learned to slow down considerably (even in a 30 zone) when another car gets too close for my liking, or in other words.. when another driver is willing to put my life at risk. I had a taxi tail gating me a couple of days ago and I gradually slowed right down to 15mph until he got the message to pull back a little.

They, as in the other party shouldn't, the insurers have to do this, hence the drag, ;)

It will be decided in favour of the op based on stated info, just takes time, ;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

The insurer will payout market value (i.e what it will cost to replace).

What kind of car is it; model; age; condition etc?

Your insurer will likely allow upto 60/65% of this value before they decide to just write it off so if it is £500 a repair over £300 is likely to see it written off; however; you could opt to take a payout and buy back the scrap for what would be a nominal sum then find a cheaper garage to repair the essentials with cheaper parts or even not get it fixed if its perfectly roadworthy.

I would be suggesting to you write off; buy it back; then ask a small independent garage to price up a repair to make it roadworthy (not worrying about minor scratches etc). I reckon you would actually end up with money in your pocket.

Thanks for this although I am trying to work it out but not doing well. I paid £700 for it, it has a few scratches, one long one but apart from that no problems. It is a suzuki baleno, auto, r reg, 1.6. I tried to look on parkers website to get a price but due it being an old car it took me to the next page and asked for a payment. So i found another website
    http://www.desperateseller.co.uk/valueyourcar/carvalue/results.asp?mi=&make=Suzuki&model=Baleno+%2895-02%29&body=Hatchback+3dr&edition=1.6+GS+&regyear=1998+R+&mk=41&mo=23774&bo=1926&ed=10175&up=1686649

Yet when I have put the milaege in it gives me a different price
