  • Please BE WARNED. I tried this a few months ago the first time I got nothing of value and a lot of soiled under clothes and one bag that had clearly got wet and was totally ruined. I thought maybe I had been unlucky so tried again. This time I did get some designer togs but not in fantastic condition. I put them on Ebay only to find they only allow 3 branded items of clothes in one month. The only way around this is to register as a business which informs the inland revenue who will ask you to complete a tax return and you will pay tax on any money made. In short I would really not recommend anyone tries this unless they can afford to loose their money. Please also bear in mind that with tax and commission you are paying half as much again to your bid. eg you bid £180 you pay £270! for 8 bags of clothes you would have to be very lucky to even get your money back! Hope this has helped anyone thinking of making some extra cash.

The bags that end-up at lost luggage auctions are the ones where people fail to securely attach identity labels.
Where I used to work, we had a guy who's brother worked for one of the major airlines in the role 'luggage identification and return'. They go through any bags without tags to look for anything that can help them reunited the bags with their owners.
Sometimes this is not possible, so they send the bags to auction.

The lesson here is to make sure you not only label the outside of the luggage you take on holiday, but make sure you also label the inside as well.

If you fail to label both inside and outside of your luggage then you have only yourself to blame if it gets lost and is not returned to you. It is so obvious that it's a no-brainer.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • Hi all,

I'm brand new to these forums. I live in Nottingham and am just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction for local police auctions and East Midlands Airport or Doncaster Airport lost property auctions.

    Many thanks.
  • I worked for BA in Lost Luggage for 15+ years, please be assured, we do everything possible to reunite bags with owners, if there is no name/address on or in the bag. We will call libraries for instance if there is a library book inside, to ask who had the book taken out last, if there are receipts for expensive items we would call the retailers and try and get info as to the purchaser. A mobile phone inside was great as we would charge it, then scroll throught the address book for "home" or "mum". Sometimes there is just nothing to go on sadly- so label those bags!
    Debt-free...and staying that way...
  • So.... IS this worth doing, and how do I go about it?

    I live near heathrow airport

    Thanks

Like any other decent auction, the more people that know about them, the more muppets you get there willing to bid silly money, so the less they are worth going to. I went to one a fair few years back and even then I wouldn't say it was worthwhile, now they make TV programs about them, I dread to think what they're like.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

I wouldnt bother with the airline ones, Leave that to those that know what the case is worth and the contents are either 50p a kg?

Police auctions i have been to before. When i was there last, Huge bags of woolen jumpers were getting seriously high bids.
£50 + for each bag. Auctioneer was starting low, But as each bag went for £45+ he tried starting at £20 - £30 but the bidders were not playing ball.

After a couple of not solds he started to pass on them, This upset the buyers.

Clothing with the labels removed. We bough a bag for our own use, Sorted out the sizes we wanted and sold the rest for a profit.

Bikes were plentiful. Some fetching lots and others fetching little. Lots of tools, From boxes of hand tools to cement mixers. Lots of money.
