that would be my first step, and as quickly as possible as *some* of the things you've mentioned could be brought on by bad eyesight, ie shouting out in the night/refusing to go upstairs on his own. When I was a similar age I had really bad un-prescribed eyesight and would quite often see things that werent there (shadows became scary as they had no definition for me)

other things you mention fit too, like the reading obviously but also the punching etc it can be so frustrating not being able to see things clearly as your co-ordination sucks and perhaps he is just wound up from that. (most people with bad eyesight who dont wear glasses have nothing to compare it to and therefore think its normal BUT if things have changed recently or quickly with his eyes he would notice) also headaches and eye strain could be affecting him.

As an eye test is free and you could sort it out quicker than a doctors appt I would go down that route first, its something your doctor may advise anyway !

    poor you and poor him.

Please go to the GP; this behaviour is not at all how a 'normal' kid behaves. We can't say what the problem might be, but there is one, and the sooner you get to the doctor the sooner you can get to the bottom of it and get some help. Don't be fobbed off and don't be made to feel it's a parenting issue. Bad behaviour on its own could be, but the phobias and odd reactions he has wouldn't be just naughtiness.

Young children can get mental illnesses (not just disorders/issues like ADHD/Aspergers) and I'm NOT saying I think he has, but he might have, and if so, he needs help pronto. A teenager in my family was admitted to a residental mental health unit for teenagers and I was astonished to find out that the residential unit next to it was for 6-12 year olds! I found out when I saw a bunch of little kids cycling round the grounds with a carer. I'd never realised young children could have these problems. I'm not trying to scare you but if he needs help, please go get it and don't be afraid. Of course the kids in these units had severe severe problems, go to the docs now and nip it in the bud if it does turn out to be a mental health issue.

it sounds like some form of autism your child may have.have a chat with gp who can look into it for you
some kids bad behaviour can be down to this
but if there is forms of ocd like going to toilet it sounds something similar

As soon as I read the first few lines I thought Aspergers. Not because I have any experience at all but because I was talking to a lady today who has a friend with a 19 year old son with it. He will not speak to or acknowledge his father at all (calls him 'that man') and has to have his food stored separately as he wont eat it if 'that man' has touched it. He also has other bizarre behavioural issue which seem to tie in with your post.

Hope you get the help you need - it sounds as though all 3 of you really need it.
