I am at my wits end :(

Options
Hi all, I am a regular user but don't want anyone I know to know this is me.

I am really worried about my 8 year old son and do not know if his behaviour is normal or not, I also don't know who else to ask.

He is very naughty all the time, throwing things around, kicking furniture, threatening to punch and kick me and his sister. He calls me names also and swears at me which we do not do at home.

He won't use the toilet unless he lines it with paper around the seat before sitting on it. He won't use spoons to eat his cereal if he thinks someone has eaten off it before (even if its been washed), he won't have a drink if he thinks someone has drank out of the cup.

He will not wash himself in the bath at all.

He fights us everytime he goes to bed, refusing to lie down, calling us names and shouting down stairs all night long, he won't even take himself to the toilet

During the day he refuses to go upstairs by himself as well.

He often still wets the bed.

I don't know if I am being stupid asking on here but I just don't know if this is 'normal' the amount of things he can't do for himself is wearing me out.

He also complains that when lookin at things they look 'big', for example, he will say that my head looks big.

I don't know if anyone has any ideas but I realise this sounds so silly when written down..

Is this a new thing or has it been getting worse since he was littler? Have you discussed it with your GP. I don't think it sounds "normal" but I don't have an 8 year old boy (my DS is 3). If you are remotely concerned speak to your GP. Some of that behaviour sounds a bit like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Has he had any changes or traumatic experiences in recent years that could have triggered it.

Hope you get to the bottom of it. Hugs
  • hi its been steadily getting worse and worse over the past 3 or 4 years, I have thought about going to the gp but have no idea what to say.

Sounds like ADHD to me, either way go to your doctor and they will assign a mental health visitor to assess him in his home environment.

My son would get a clip round the ear if he started shouting, ranting and raving and swearing.
  • Thank you INT1, I am finding it really difficult to keep my cool with how he is being all of the time, its so hard and I am close to tears almost all of the time

Write down a list like you have said here and hand it to your GP. It means you won't forget anything and there is less chance of you getting upset when you try and say what is troubling you about him.

It does sound like he needs assessed so you can get the appropriate help xxx

Ps - My boys are 5 and 10 and if they showed those signs I would go to the GP as well

I tend to agree with this, apart from the clip round the ear part. Thats going to help NO ONE. OP see your GP and then maybe he'll refer you. If you're not sure what to say, make a note of bullet points, which will make things easier for you.

Just a quick question is your son just like this just at home or does he behave like this at school too?

My son is 8 and none of what you have said sounds like 'normal' behaviour to me.. I would call your GP today and go and have a chat. Your son sounds like he needs some help.....and you do too!

Good Luck and MASSIVE hugs....it must be awful.

He is the 'class clown' always messing about. He can't read as he messes around excessively and is always very easily distracted. In a whole lesson he will write just one sentence and thats it.

The teachers have said about his slow work etc but don't seem very concerned about it.

my son is 8 and is very similar with behaviour tho not the eating thing or the paper around the toilet, the shouting name calling and throwing things he does but your son does sound worse

my son is dyspraxic and has aspergers and all this behaviour happens when he has to do something he doesnt want to do, i dont have any answers yet as i am waiting to see cahms and will talk to them, this behaviour has got worse over the last couple of years. my son is an angel at school, tho some of his friends say he is mad.

i think you need a referal from your gp write down everything he does, i always forget what im going to say so normally write down everything i am concerned about beforehand
