Oh and the chicken pakoras were good too but I've only made them once as I can't cope with the house smelling of deep frying lol!

I did the lamb shish last night and will be cooking the remaining lamb tonight. Very nice and not too heavy on the herbs and spices, either. Will definitely continue to use the marinade recipe. I usually just season the lamb so this made a very pleasing change.

Thanks to whoever recommended the book.

Well I've gone from not liking Indian food, to grudgingly going to the Indian restaurant around the corner because its the only eating-out place in the village and there is *one thing* on the menu which isn't too curry-ish... to now cooking my own curries from scratch on a weekly basis because someone on here recommended this book!

OH can't understand it because I'd cook myself something different when he had curry using a jar of sauce but now I'm making curry so often that even he's getting sick of it! But I know which spices give the flavours I don't like and which I do so by using this book I can tweak the balance in favour of the things that I prefer.

And the chilli chow mein and doner kebab have also gone down remarkably well over the last few weeks.

So now I'm a convert, I'm thinking of following up on the other suggestion I picked up on this thread and buying it for my brother&SIL and for my cousin for christmas, along with some of the herbs&spices that are necessary. As I've got 8 months to go, there is plenty of time to source suitable spice recepticles so that I can buy some of the bigger bags and just portion up to reduce costs. But I can't decide what the key ingredients are and how many jars I'd need for each present. I'm thinking:
    -chilli powder
    -curry powder
    -paprika
    -cumin
    -tumeric
    -coriander powder
    -garam masala
    -cayenne pepper
    -chinese five spice
    -onion powder

which would be 10 apiece (working on the principle that they might not have any of this stuff in stock as then tend to be open-a-jar-of-sauce people). What do you think? Any that you'd add to the list because you use all the time? Any you'd take off the list because they don't crop up that often? Thinks like garlic&ginger paste and tomato puree can go in the basket in the jars they come in but its the herbs and spices that I'm trying to count up.

If I can find some small cheap jars between now and December then I'm going to stock up ready!

Just bumping this thread to say that the Kindle edition of this book is currently 99p on Amazon. (I think it may be today only.)

Edit 25/4: still available for 99p.

Was planning on tikka-ing some lamb this weekend but forgot to take it out of the freezer. Do you reckon I could kill 2 birds with one stone by letting the lamb pieces defrost in the marinade or is it gonna be best to defrost first then marinade tomorrow?

It would have been handy if the new book had a peek look at the index not just an enlargement of the cover when you click on it.
