    As far as I know, it is taxable and NI-able, but it's below a level to make any difference? 2011-2012 tax allowance is £7475 a year which is £143.75 a week, so the SMP is under that.

    However, for me and you Giz, our qualifying week was in the 2010 tax year which is when they start to look at it, and that year's tax allowance was £6475 a year which is £124.52 a week, SMP is £124.88 so we would be taxed on that extra bit - negligible I'd say!

    Not sure about NI though...

    Have booked in for a flu jab on Tuesday - did anyone else make a decision?

    WSS :p

    NI is 11% on anything over £105 weekly or £455 per month so again, you'll pay minimal.

    Sorry that's right the first 6 weeks will prob have some tax off, to keep it really simple once maternity pay goes down to the £124.88 a week rate regardless of whether it's SMP or MA you won't pay any tax if you have a standard tax code (647L this year and 747L from April 11)

    The point I was making is that SMP is a payment which is subject to tax and NI deductions - in theory it may not be enough to actually pay the deductions but if anything else were payable it would count towards your allowance.

    MA doesn't attract the deductions and won't count.

    Hope that makes sense :D

    Hope to butt in with a Q of my own here if you both don't mind. You sound very knowledgeable. MA is something you can claim even if you are self employed right?

    Do you know what the qualifying rules are?

    Do you know what the qualifying rules are?

    here's a link which explains it

    http://www.dwp.gov.uk/publications/specialist-guides/technical-guidance/ni17a-a-guide-to-maternity/maternity-allowance-ma/

    The basics are you need to have been self employed for 26 out of the 66 weeks before your due date so (6 months out of a year and 3 months) and should have been registered with HMRC paying Class 2 National Insurance Contributions (NICs), or hold a Small Earnings Exception certificate.

    If you are self-employed and do not have a small earnings exception certificate, for any week covered by a Class 2 NI contribution you will be treated as having enough earnings to result in the standard rate of MA, payable at the end of the week covered by a Class 2 NI contribution.

  • She's still withchild:eek::eek::eek:

    She wasn't having regular contractions and coz waters have gone she was admitted to hospital at 8:30am and was given a pessary to help move things along, and nothing much has happened since then, no real contractions or anything so looks like along drawn out labour for her...and she can't have her waterbirth either due to having the pessary I think! So major libes to Legs please...she's gonna need 'em!

    On the plus side she's had a show so fingers crossed for her :)
