Hi, can I join in. As I have said on other threads, I am not crafty, able to sew knit etc., also, people in our family don't tend to like chutneys etc., so the homemade stuff like that is out. Ideas, for parents/grandparents are difficult. They don't need food hampers as have enough money - they aren't struggling though not flush if you know what I mean. A couple of years ago we did baskets with nice biscuits, tea, coffee, drinking choc, pannetone, china mug etc etc in. they looked lovely, but can't really do them again. Really stumped.

On a positive note, I got a magazine subscription for brother last year with Tesco clubcard deals and they have sent me a renewal with a buy one get one free deal so will do that and get the other one for Ds as an extra. Have looked through clubcard mag for ideas but everything seems to be vastly overpriced compared to the real price, that it doesn't seem worth doing that way. For example, there was a four pack garden book set for £10 of clubcard vouchers which means £40 at 4x. When I looked on Amazon I could get them for under a fiver each.

Has anyone used those reading lights that clip on to the top of a book? That could be an idea as I have ordered a book for my mum. My dad objects to her reading in bed as the light keeps him awake. Does anyone know if they are any good, and if so, what other things could go with it and the book to make a themed set?

    I've found some for 49p!!!!

Basket from freecycle, shreded wood basket filling from ebay,
Box of Guylian choc half price offer £2.50 co-op, small box of thorntons chocs that I got from Asda £1.00 of and some ferror rocher £1.75 from co-op when they were on offer, but as I couldn't fit the box in I took them out and just filled round the edges with them, Wrapped it in Cellophane and got ribbon 3 for 2 offer at hobbycraft.

  • I was in Aldi yesterday and they had some Spanish Olive oil in a fancy bottle with a swing top (500ml i think) for £2.99. Would be nice for making flavoured olive oil. The labels are paper and could be soaked off and your own put on. I thought that was a bit of a bargain and easier than doing it trhe long winded way...by the time you have bought the bottle and the oil to put in it, it would prob cost that much anyway.

They also had "Luxury Spanish Hot Choc" in a silver tin....I checked and no sign of Aldi anywhere on the tin so suitable for our more snobby giftees!

    Just thought I would share!!

Some good ideas on here - will try to catch up on them all when I get a good 10 minutes :)

I was going to knit some scarves - well that went out the window a couple of months ago ;) I also had the thought of knitting dishclothes and making an eco-cleaning hamper but can't for life of me work out how to knit from outside-in rather than a simple row after row (which is my limit when it comes to knitting sadly.)

Now looks like it is going to be:
Photo frames with customised fabric padding to fit with the recipient's decor
DVD album of our girls last year
Blackberry vodka from brambles in our garden n cheap vodka put through a water filter (tip picked up on here somwhere, sorry unable to credit :o) in glass ex-mineral water bottles.
We usually buy close family a book each too (bookshops like The Works usually have the best books for interest)

Girls usually get three main presents + clothes if we see anything particularly nice for the winter and their stocking filled with things like crayons, underwear, etc. They also always get ridiculous amounts from family. Eldest DD has written to Father Christmas asking for a saxaphone (she saw one in Asda one week so wants the elves to make her one!) a bike and a monster book so that should be easy enough. Bless them, I will make the most of them while they don't covet all sorts of branded/trendy gear!
Love and compassion to all x
