Hey late night compers.
I was just wondering. If a competition is to win "tickets" to an event and other prizes, do you have to attend the show in order to get the rest of your prize. For example some competitions give you shiw tickets and vouchers to spend on clothes or a hamper. I was just wondering if its worth entering them to win the "bigger prize" if not so interested in the tickets. Its just i noticed someone on here won gig tickets and £500 worth of clothing, i didnt enter myself as wouldnt have been able to make the gig. But they said they wouldnt be making the gig. So it got me thinking.Ask.. Believe.. Receive..

If it's a big prize like the hamper you mentioned, then NO as they can't expect you to trudge home carrying a wicker basket but if it's stuff like vouchers, then they 'could' say they'll give it to you at the show or they could send it out!!
When I attended a Baby events run by Boots some years ago, and won some stuff, even though I could carry it home easily, I was told it would be couriered to meSECRET TO WINNING PRIZES:

If you are really concerned I suggest browsing via FireFox with AdBlock Plus installed. This will prevent the site seeing where the traffic originates from ie here.
Thanks. I've just downloaded thisbut my question is, "where would it show I clicked the link from?"

i disnt realise adblock plus stopped them form seeing the referral link. its great for stopping flash ads though and i would not be without it. i dont worry about themn seeing referrals coming form here. if the comp asks where you heard about it and link from another website is an option im honest and say here. some comps lately ive noticed even have "martin lewis website" or "moneysavineexpert" as options in their drop down menus
i dont see them knowing i come form here as a problem, i still get the wins and if there is an odd site that doesnt like it they either request we dont post their comps or request we dont post answers. there are enough who dont mind us posting them here.0 -

It does annoy me when this happens as it is often the case that some of the prize is being wasted. I've read about people on another site who have entered things to events that have included travel/accommodation, and they've just claimed the travel expenses and wasted the event tickets, which personally I think is terrible.
Fortunately most promoters have some common sense and so a lot of prizes will be collected at the event.
Personally I think you did the right thing by not entering if you couldn't attend.0 -

Does anyone else wonder why the 4 locked stickes on the comp board are still there? Are they not all covered in the comping guide which is unlocked and therefore allows people to ask questions about the rules if they need to? Maybe they aren't covered by the comping guide, i've never actually read the whole thing but i've never read any of the locked stickies either. Just seems odd that they are still there in a way (and 3 of them are over 2 years old!) when I know that 'they' have mentioned they don't like having lots of stickies but there are currently 12 on main board!2008: £783.12 - 2009: £6,401.15 - 2010: £4,230.61 - 2011: £8720 - 2012: £2,041.89
2013: £134.960 -
I agree. I think that the stickies could do with an overhaul, especially since the site has changed a lot recently. (in fact, comping in general has changed a lot recently).0

reason the
Free to enter competitions only please
was locked was because newbies were posting comps on it
i remember sending MSE Andrea a pm about it when it was posted & she locked it
think the How To Find Competitions Ending By Date &
Expiry Date Format - Urgent Please Read could be updated/moved together in one sticky just in case peeps don't read the comping guidebut it's all in the comping guide anyway,
& the Hotlinking , Copying competition text could be put together on one sticky as they're both to do with copying/pasting/etc
also think the Comping Guide - Getting Started & Other FAQs
should be updated with Glad 's name in the #5
as proberly only us 'old' ones remember kipper
the Rules, How To Search and Duplicate Threads - Updated 25/01
has replies/links that are out of date, even though the rules are still standing, the A-Z link needs updating for the new AIOE, AOOP, WEM, WTC, etc's,
have mentioned this before & sent a pm to the BG ages ago on that board regarding it, had a reply but then was never implemented or reanswered
that's just my opinion on the stickys/ old links etc for what it's worth, even though some of us have mentioned it before nowplease be a responsible pet owner & spay/neuter your pets, too many strays & not enough homes for them sadly.0 -
Hi, Can Anyone Help? Ive won a comp on fb and twitter but didnt keep my reciept and dont want to win the prize anyway?
I agree with the (fb)/(twitter) headings. This would be very useful in my opinion. As to the best way of ensuring that comp posters put them in the title Im not sure tbh.Is there a guide/sticky to posting comps where this point could be mentioned maybe? Maybe gentle reminding is best but that would involve lots of bumping i assume, maybe a nice pm?
I also agree that there is ,and will continue to be,a growth in the number of fb and tw comps in the near future, however Im not as pessimistic as WO that this is the future of compingAfter looking at twitter for a week or so I must say I find it utterly mindnumbing
The prizes on offer are desultory in 90% of cases imho ( Hundreds Scrabbling and twittering utter garbage for 8days to win a £2 wax cake ) and the end dates/following targets are too fluid and at the whim of the 'comp' originator.
Although there are decent prizes on offer in the other 10% these are usually from established companies and/or online retailers/blogs,the vast detritus comes from small blogs/companies/individuals.
From a compers pov the lack of structure and the fluidity make it impossibe to monitor and track comp interest. I also think that regardless of the speed of growth it will never be possible to achieve the mathmatical volume of entries needed to make comping 'worthwhile'.
Theres also an arguement about global marketing of brands and goods that dosent apply to trad comps but ive not thought that through yet and in any case will take another 8 paragraphs
Didnt like twitter as u can prob telland although it will be around I think it will always be a minor complementary to the more traditional comping.?
I havent looked at fb yet so not sure of the 'threat' there:D
The Discussion about only taking half the prize is interesting.Ive seen several this month that I half like ( ie 2 weeks in Austria but with ski lessons and equipment, ive entered these but without any intention of going near a set of ski's if I won, surely this cannot be compulsory!NO IM NOT DOING THE CROSSCOUNTRY RUN!!!) or a nice break in Edinburgh I think marred by a half Marathon in the middle!
I would have no qualms about just taking the travel and accom and using that as a base for enjoying the area/location in a way I thought more befitting! Would be genuinely interesting to hear both sides of the argument though.
Sorry for the long and dull ramble but I only pop in and its great to see debate on all points of this crazy world we seem to inhabit:D
