I seem to be in the minority and totally sympathise with people who have had problems with Santander, loss of online access, random charges applied to their accounts, etc etc but I have to say the transfer of my A&L account to Santander has gone without a hitch. Had a weekend of not being able to use my online access when the migration took place but apart from that it's been fine. Plus, now I have a branch in my home town (which I can get served at far quicker than the H'Fax I previously had to use) since there wasn't an A&L account in town.

I did have some intial frustrations setting up online banking when I opened my account a year ago, and tbh the Santander Credit Card online banking isn't perfect by any means, but again I'm not sure that makes other banks better...no scrap that, First Direct was super easy to set up. But overall, I'm pretty happy with Santander....so far.....

I logged into my Santander online banking a few days ago to find a random account appear alongside my other ones... looked oddly familiar...

Turns out it was my old A+L account that I opened 22 years ago when I was 13 or so and was last used in 2004. I'd forgotten all about it.

Quite a tidy sum in there too, however it was locked as it was dormant so I went into branch, got it unlocked and then closed it properly and transferred all my wonderful forgotten loot to my Santander account.

Hmmm... what shall I do with the extra £1.71 that was in there?!? :rotfl:
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

There are none so blind as those that won't see. People probably don't realise how bad their customer service is until it's too late. Many of the complaints on here are from people wanting to leave and santander not closing their accounts or releasing their money.

Exactly! I'm stuck between two bank accounts because even the Cooperative Bank switching team can't persuade this lot to close my account. I have phoned Santander myself and removed all my money because my Direct Debits are now active on my new account, but I opened the Alliance and Leicester (now Santander) account on the understanding that I would pay in a set sum each month, so I could end up being 'fined' for Santander's inefficiency!

FWIW I closed my Santander (A&L) account and moved to Barclays. Very happy that I did.

Strangely, Santander were the most helpful when it came to closing my account. :D

Well then, maybe you and your colleagues can deal with my "amusing" Santander tale.

You botched my account transfer (as has been widely reported, such as Wednesday's article in The Guardian), didn't tell me that you'd changed my account's sort code, sent my new PIN number to a house which I sold three years ago (even though, laughably, the customer service operator SPECIFICALLY confirmed the address when issuing the PIN), and now?! Well, you will find this very "amusing"!

I finally received my new PIN, and thought that I'd be able to access my account for the first time in nearly a month. But, alas, no - it wouldn't let me in. One very confusing phonecall with your customer service department revealed it all - apparently I was supposed to wait 10 days after receiving the PIN before trying to use it! Even though (a) this is laughable, and (b) wasn't mentioned at any step along the way, even in the letter containing my PIN. So now - and this will make you chuckle - I have to wait for another PIN to arrive, and then wait another 10 days, and then check my login again.

The most amusing part - I can't close my account, because I haven't been able to administer it for a month now :rotfl:

good, perhaps you can answer my question. I've had an account with Santander since January - how long do you advise i wait til applying for the Santander zero credit card and is it best to apply for that one or the other Santander credit card on offer? Is it advisable to wait until it's showing as 'offered' on my internet banking or just apply now?
ps - I am one of those rarities on this forum apparently - v happy with Santander, not experienced any problems!
    :o
