Yes there is chatting on this thread, but why is that a bad thing? There are people who are SAHM ( or Dads) and people who can’t get out much, so they don’t see different people every day so ‘chatting’ is helping them.
I think so too. I have have always gone straight to the Moneysaving Old Style section first when coming onto this site but have only recently started posting on the Daily thread. This section really inspires me to do more old style things. I have bought a BM and felt very guilty at spending so much on something that may just end up in the cupboard. But I am so glad I did because I haven't eaten shop bought bread for weeks. Homemade bread is so much more tastier and I love my BM! I wouldn't have considered buying one if it hadn't been for all the comments and people expressing their opinions of BMs on here. By reading people's chatty comments I could see how nice and helpful a BM would be. It wouldn't be the same if these hints and tips were expressed as a list rather than in a chatty way.catowen wrote:I think the reason people enjoy the daily thread on the OS board is because we dont get the complaints that you get in the 'arms' and that people have been able to post without fear of being critisised
In other parts of the site you would definitely get more nasty or sarcastic comments and you have to be more careful what you post. On this daily thread everyone seems so friendly and nice and, if you ask me, it is very old style to have a 'chat over the garden fence' thread as so many of us live such isolated lives compared to years ago. I agree that these threads should be deleted every month or so but please either join in or leave us to it. As someone said before, you havent got to read each and every post. Perhaps there should be a rule that you can't start a new thread until 6.00 am?0 -

I think people are getting very snobby as to who or what is OS and what's not. No one on this board claims to live exactly how they did in the 1940's so if they are posting on a diary type thread something modern is bound to creep in. OS is also a very individual thing. Someone who cooks one meal from scratch once a week would be welcome to post on OS but they wouldnt necessarily be classed as living as OS life. Similarly someone who can see the benefits of OS but hasn't got the time or the knowledge to carry it out would still be welcome on the daily thread.
I can see where people are coming from saying they are not going to post on OS again. After the reception I got from trying to help people with my meal planners I have cut down a lot of my posting on here.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040 -
I don't think people are being snobby. People love the daily thread and feel very protective of it. That's very evident on here. A few people think it's changing and brought that up with Pink Winged as something they felt concerned about.
Just to clarify again, the thread is not under attack and Queenie hasn't been asked to change it or do anything that you haven't been told about. And certainly no-one has even suggested that we lose it, except that people seem to be worried that this is a possibility.
As board guides it is Pink Winged and my job to try to keep the board running smoothly. If some people are concerned about an issue, we look into it and try to help. We're not here to make the rules or make the decisions about how the board is run. Queenie's opinion was sought as the thread was started by her as I understand it and in turn she has encouraged debate about it.
I am sorry some people seem to feel worried about the thread at the moment, or reluctant to post. And hopefully, we will all be able to work together to change that.
Keep coming up with suggestions, and do keep it friendly. We'll get there!May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
I have only recently started posting on the Daily Thread, but I have found so inspiring.
In the 3/4 weeks I have been on the site I have started to learn to cook, got out our BM and actually started using it regularly, changed how I clean and I think most importantly "met" so many really lovely, friendly people who are more than happy to help others (who they don't know) with their experiences, surely this is the essense of OS.
I have saved so much money just in the last 3/4 weeks, by meal planning and writing shoppping lists, making mine own bread, and using OS cleaning products.
Yes I find the length of the thread daunting sometimes when I haven't been able to post on it first thing in the morning, but surely the length of the thread also indictates how much people value the "chat" and friendship that has developed as a result of it. None of my friends in the "real" world get my new OS ways, but with the people on the daily thread I feel comfortable, knowing that I can ask for help, and will be given their experiences with a friendly response and a bit of humour.
Long live the Daily Thread (whatever its length)0 -
Hey eveyone,
My tuppenceworth...
I am one of those not very OS'ers - although I am trying very hard. I have a slow cooker (although I am yet to use it), don't have a breadmaker and occassionally (horror!) have a ready meal... However, in the past few months, I have batch cooked loads of times, meal planned, tried Flying (albeit unsuccessfully!), made cakes and muffins, done a grocery and storecupboard challenge and countless other O/S achievements - big and small. I have lots more ideas stored up to use as and when I have the time (I work full time) and the inclination...
I get so much inspiration for living a more organised and focussed life via the OS daily thread and feel so much better for taking and leaving the tips, recipes and lifestyles as required. I often feel a sense of being alone in what I am trying to do - and this online community makes me feel valued and understood - even if I don't post everyday. Everyone has always made me feel extremely welcome - I always read most of the thread to see how you are all doing and genuinely care about you all.
I just simply don't understand why people don't just skim the bits of the daily thread that they are not interested in?
I too feel a sense of sadness that this has been raised although I do really appreciate the situation that Queenie, Pink and Gingham find themselves in.
I hope its resolved with a minimum upset. I certainly won't be posting on the daily thread again - this is not intended to be a threat (!) - as I really don't want my words on the daily threads to be scrutinised, it feels a little too Big Brothery for me... - can't we just live and let live?

SS please don't stop posting on the daily thread, if you do then the whole point of it changes, don't worry about being scrutinised. There are hundreds of people who read it but don't post, where is the difference? We need to keep going, keep plodding on, even if it's just to show how much it is needed and valued.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

I have never posted on the daily thread but love reading it every day.I agree with BS when she says that OS is a very individual thing. .I certainly gain alot from it even though I don't post and the way the posters seem to pick each other up when things are going wrong for them is truly inspiring.
I can't see that you can have a bench mark in place as to what individuals class as OS as I would hate to think that because I'm not self sufficient or keep chickens or do any of the truly OS stuff that I would not be welcome there if I wished to contribute. Most people on there seem to be average people with families trying to do the best they can with what they have, bringing up children the best they can.Surely if the input from others makes that a little easier its got to be for the good?0 -

None of us wanted to shoot the messenger but I think we were all devastated that an invaluable source of help, support and advice was under what felt like attack.
I really hope that Tootles, twink and all the others will continue posting as the thread, the board and the site will be poorer without them.
Yes, elona, it's a very uncomfortable, and upsetting, position. I also hope everyone will continue posting.Penelope_Penguin wrote:.... One of the aspects which was brought to my attention around that time is, the need to curtail too many "chatty" threads because (and rightly so) they detract from those wishing to find answers to their moneysaving dilema's or learn new money saving ways and, if a chat was what was needed, there is always The Arms. ..... I was able to discuss this with those concerned, explain the idea behind the thread and that the daily wasn't just an excuse for a chatty thread per se, .... printed off every page up to that point and went through all the figures to support the why's and evidence the wherefore's. All good moneysaving stuff when it was broken down into facts and figures!Queenie wrote:... The OS daily thread was set up so that we *do* have an area to discuss our daily doings.
