Daily thread, what do you think?

I thought that the daily thread was exactly that, where people discussed what they were doing that day. As it is being posted on the OS board, again, i assumed that the people who read and posted on these threads would be like minded people.
I think i feel a bit like tootles and a bit uncomfortable posting on the daily thread now, i felt that by posting my day, helps me actually do what ive posted and gave me a feeling of being part of a virtual community, which as a single mum who lives on her own, and dont actually know that many people has been very important to me.
I would say that a big part of being OS is the ability to help others, something that has all but disapeared from this society we are now living in, and that people, who okay, might not be doing anything OS, and wanting to have a chat with virtual friends is still an OS thing to do.0 -

And to a large extent, you are right.
As I say for the 3rd time, this has been brought TO my attention because (allegedly, I have not personally seen them) there have been complaints.
I also post about my day and it also helps me to focus and I enjoy posting my achievements - even when others find them unbelievable or feel I put them to shame. But there are things it is clearly not, and those are the things which can cause complaints to be made.
Now, obviously, the best thing would be for the people who are unhappy about the way it's developed to post themselves and discuss it; I can't discuss their opinions or points of view. But nor am I trying to upset anyone here!!! (Although I seem to be making a good job of doing it!)
Please do read my post again. It isn't offensive, it isn't intended to cause upset or prevent people from posting. Quite the contrary!!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I rarely post on the daily thread but I read it every day. I love reading about everyone's daily lives, and the friendship and support on this board is fantastic.
There are people who have made genuine friends here and value the help and encouragement they get from others. I read what people are doing and what they are cooking and it encourages me.
Yes there is chatting on this thread, but why is that a bad thing? There are people who are SAHM ( or Dads) and people who can’t get out much, so they don’t see different people every day so ‘chatting’ is helping them.
I for one think this board is excellent the way it is, it helps people with hints for money saving and housework, and also supports people through friendship and camaraderie when they need it, don’t forget in the ‘olden days’ people had neighbours to go to when they needed help and advice and a bit of a chat, that doesn’t really happen any more, so this thread is ‘our neighbours’ and being helpful and neighbourly is the ultimate way in which to live old style.0 -

I understand what you are saying, i just dont understand who would be complaining, or why.
I think the reason people enjoy the daily thread on the OS board is because we dont get the complaints that you get in the 'arms' and that people have been able to post without fear of being critisised (sp?) and thats why people like tootles and myself are now feeling uncomfortable with this post. Like i said, i understand the aims of the daily thread, particularly within a money savings website, but surely if the OS daily thread community are doing something wrong, it should be explained by the board guides what we are doing wrong so that it can be corrected. Surely it should be brought to the attention of those who are abusing the thread, rather than making 'normal' OSers uncomfortable and upset. If i am one of those people, i would like to know.0 -

Queenie, a note of support here from a newbie - and a brief word to everyone else
I moderate on another website's message boards (about as far away from MSE as it is possible to be! LOL) and so I sympathise with a moderator's position.
Sometimes you have to say or do things that you know aren't going to go down too well or could be taken the wrong way. As a moderator if people complain then generally you have to do something, one way or another. Now if this site is anything like the one I help run, and I suspect it is, then a LOT of backroom discussion goes on before anything is ever posted out to the members - because as a moderator you take your 'job' really seriously - mainly because you LOVE the site, or else you'd never commit the time and energy you do.
I occasionally read the daily thread and it's been one of the ways I've started putting personalities to usernames and that has been really helpful. I really hope none of the posters on here takes this post in any other way than what it was intended - I've learnt an awful lot off you guys in the short space of time I've been OSing. But sometimes, you know, being a mod is a bit of a thankless task because you CAN'T always please everyone all the time.
I for one hope you all do still keep posting your inspiring OS titbits from your day - they've been a real help for me

Hi everyone,
Just to put you all in the picture, I have had three pm’s this weekend from Old Stylers who expressed the fact that they were unhappy with how the daily thread has become too long and too full of chat.
I asked Queenie for her thoughts and opinions on how the daily thread has evolved as she was the originator of the thread and I know it means a great deal to her. I believe that this is the reason this thread has come about.
Anyway, I tend to agree that the thread is getting very long every day, but try as I might I have been unable to think of a sensible solution. It is not for me to decide what the content of the thread should be either. That is for the MSE team to decide.
So I’ll tell you all, as I have told the members who pm’d me, I intend to contact Andrea about this tomorrow to see if we can come up with a solution that will be acceptable to all the Old Stylers who read post, and get so much out of the the daily thread.
Unfortunately, Andrea will be busy preparing the Tips e-mail, so it is unlikely that she will have time to discuss it until later in the week.
In the meantime, feel free to post your ideas and preferences here, but try to keep it friendly.

Queenie,
I understand what you are saying. I like the daily thread because I do get the feeling that people are popping in for a chat in between chores. I work full time and since joining in I have been much more motivated to start in on the housework when I get home. I've got and use a slow cooker every week and my house is slowly being decluttered and looking better every day. I don't think I'll ever have the time to become truly OS but I'm trying in my own way and a lot of it is down to the daily thread.
Yes it's nice to have hints and tips on how to do things but it's also great to find out more about the different people and their lives, it gives a much more rounded picture and I think catowen is very right when she says that this sense of community has been lost to a great extent today.
Perhaps one way of dealing with the space issue would be to delete the daily threads after a certain amount of time, perhaps a month so that space is freed up for ongoing discussion.
I really feel that this is a place where like minded people cam gather and let off steam if need be - I've occasionally gone into the moneysavers Arms and Discussion Time but not felt the same sense of community there at all.
Sorry for the waffle but i do think that the daily thread would suffer it was limited to tips, hints and lists of peoples OS activities without giving more of a picture of what the rest of their lives are like.
