Before reading this - I didn't even know about the Arms forum (oops) Should I have seen that? I never really read the daily posts as I thought it was exactly for people to share what their day consists of etc and encouragement to be OS. I guess I thought this from the odd time I've looked in there.
At least it's on 1 thread so it's all contained in one place, maybe renaming the thread would be useful. It'd be a shame to move it to the arms and it's specifically OS'ers that are posting there.
As I said, I don't pop in there, but I realise lots of people like to chat there. I do however see the point that it's not what it was originally started for but I guess things evolve. Maybe a vote would please the majority.Love MSE, Las Vegas and chocolate!0 -
As a relative newbie in OS I have to comment it was the daily post that encouraged me to post in here and reading what other people do and achive each day has given me the chance to look at my own life and put it into perspective
I have decided to give up my part time job as a dinner lady I officially work an hour a day but it's alwaysworks out 1/2 an hour longer so with travel that takes 2 hours a day and I've noticed how much home was suffering as a result it's made me realise that I don't need the £100.00 a month as by being in here I've learnt that just by reading what other people achive each day I can do the same and nothing will change as I will have the time to plan better
I am an administrator for a website so very different from this one but I understand how hard it is to keep everyone happy and it can be a thankless task so I can see the points of view from both sides it would be such a shame if some of the camaraderie and spirt was lost due to just three people
pamI didn't say it was your fault, I said I was going to blame you

i have to agree that the thread was getting longer and sometimes it would worry me if i had forgotten to mention someone but on saying that it was, as a widow on her own, invaluable to me to feel part of an interested and caring community
instead of turning on the telly first thing i come on here while eating breakfast and dont feel alone esp in the dark mornings and when the curtains have to close a four pm in winter, i hope some compromise will be reached and thank you to all who will have to sort it out x0 -
Morning. I spotted this last night, and was quite disappointed. I woke this morning with a deep sense of foreboding.
I found this site earlier this year, and rapidly felt that I'd found a home on OS, especially the daily thread. I was recovering from a period of depression, and my get up and go had "got up and left". OS, and the daily thread have been great in that regard. There are plenty of people worse off than I am, and there's always something interesting to read. I've been inspired to get out my knitting again, Flylady, Freecycle, make muffins, pies, interesting lunches. People have been genuinely interested in my children, DH, chooks, veg, baking, jam and wine making. I've loved reading about other people's children, the antics of their OHsand the ups and downs of their daily lives.
I agree that the thread can get long. But is this a problem? Can we not make a digest of "interesting daily thread tips" and anything that will still be useful in a month, year, or more is copied onto a new thread, and the rest of the chat is deleted after a month. Alternatively, do as I and several others do, save the bits that are useful to you as an individual in a file elsewhere.
There's no law that you must read every post in detail on the daily thread. If the thread is long, I skim through for posts from people who I'm keeping up with, or those who usually have something interesting to say.
There are plenty of long, pointless threads elsewhere on this site. There's one on the Arms currently (and I can recall several more), extremely long, and I fail to see the point of it (I'm not asking for this to be removed, just trying to make a point). If bandwidth savings are needed, surely that's a better target.
Threads on OS are usually much kinder and more measured than those here, so I'd be disappointed to see this thread moved to DT.
There are several people who post on the daily thread who, by their own admission, have fewer OS credentials than the rest of us. I'd be disappointed to lose the posts of those people, as they put our home-knitted yoghurt and hair shirts in perspective.
Would the people who have raised concerns please come out and explain exactly what their concerns are? They can PM Pink or Gingham, who can print their exact words as a quote, if they wish to remain anonymous. Without knowing this, how can we improve?
I know this is a long post, but need to say what I think. Queenie, I'm going back to read your OP again, and see if I've missed anything, or missed the point. This isn't in any way meant as a pop at you, hun.

I too don't see the problem? I know they are long sometimes, usually because we are catching up on events, asking how people are after accident or tragedy. After being jumped on once too often outside OS I don't venture too post on any other part of MSE, I don't need any extra aggravation in my life.
I'm sorry but I really think the posters who complained should have thought first of how much upset their actions would cause, Tootles has already decided to leave for friendlier climes, and yet more and more people were posting previously to this because of the sheer friendliness of OS, people who had lurked for ages but been too shy to post. Other people have stated how they found MSE because of a posting on OS. Surely this is only a good thing? If just one thread is the cause of such upset and people don't like the chat then perhaps they should ignore the daily thread completely. It's not hurting anyone, it gives strength and support to many and it would be a shame to see it altered or gone.
What people have to remember is that there are no other British OS sites, there are sites for mums, crafts or cooking but no where is there a site that covers everything including moneysaving. If people are driven away because the soul of OS is gone then where are they to go. OS Daily Thread has helped countless people, don't let it stop now.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

Just wondering if a solution would be to set up an OS chat site away from MSE?“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

I don't always read the daily thread but I do think it's whole essence is Old Style.
Years ago when we were less busy and more home based we would chat to our neighbours as we bought our vinegar in the shop to clean with or picked our tomatoes to cook with or hung out the washing to dry etc etc. Aw we talked with them we shared tips on a daily basis on the most basic of things as well as asking how the kids were etc etc. Thus we got to know our neighbours and likeminded locals and felt respected and known for who we are and not just what we did.
I have rarely had this in my lifetime, I feel people today are too busy looking for the next big thing and fighting each other to get it! Old style has alwys been a friendly place to visit and probably the only place where this old style way of chatting whilst sharing really important things happen.
I was going to PM pink winged and tell her how much I love all you guys do but I suspect her box is going to get full!! I appreciate the thread can get a bit long at times but it is a real way of OS life chatting to our neighbours and gleaning lots of information.
Sorry got a bit emotional and waffled on but I think I've said what I meant!

I was trying to type a post to say what I thought but it came across all wrong. Then I saw this -pounds_and_pensive wrote:I think it's much easier to understand how achievable OS is if it's presented as a part of 'normal' modern life - that kind of thing makes it more relevant to me and my own life, leading me to think 'I can do that'. A simple list of OS achievements alone on the other hand would probably be seen, by me at least, as depicting the activities of some fanatical time-warp cult that has no relevancy to me at all.
and it sums up my thoughts exactly. Thanks pounds_and_pensive :T
Complaints about threads have happened before. Why do some people come onto a website that works just fine, then complain when they don't like something and expect things to change just to suit them?Bulletproof0 -
I understood you completely furrypig, if I didn't have to do the school run there are days when I would not speak to another adult with the weird shifts that DH does. I would miss the community feel of OS if the daily thread went.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

Having now read all of Queenie's posts I feel really sorry that she felt put in the position she did.
None of us wanted to shoot the messenger but I think we were all devastated that an invaluable source of help, support and advice was under what felt like attack.
I really hope that Tootles, twink and all the others will continue posting as the thread, the board and the site will be poorer without them."This site is addictive!"
