I've got a 206 gti and it's good fun ! I look after it and it has seemingly looked after me so far !!!Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0

Richard, seriously, if it starts to cut out, be very careful. Its very dangerous.0

I'm not planning on buying/viewing it. I wanted to know if the anti French car sentiment is wide spread. Lots of car people use MSE so it's a good site to research on!
From your thread it seem like you are seriously considering the car and ask for people's opinion on it. If it was just about sentiment towards french cars then you could of just ask that and not put the 206 with its info up :doh:0 -
I'm not touchy at all so find someone else to take out your frustrations on because it's boring and i'm not sad enough to trawl forums looking for arguements. If I ignored MSE people's advice i'd have bought a French car and told others to , try to at least read the posts you are critical of before posting false "facts".
How many more people do you need to tell you that French cars are crap, before you are convinced.
I am not looking for an " arguement " ( read argument ).
You asked what people thought of the Peugeot, I answered.
If you don't like the answer, tough.0 -

French cars are rubbish - may as well get a pedal bike - more reliable !0 -
I know that if i might be buying off Gumtree,i would do a full online HPI check on it beforehand.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

The awful thing was, when son was to and fro with his 206 to the Peugeot dealer, and he said that he thought the cutting out was very dangerous, the mechanic laughed and said to him, "Well, the French hate us dont they"0

French cars are NOT as bad as the picture painted of them. Elsewhere in the world they don't have the same "poor" reputation that we Brits give them partially it's just an excuse to knock the French rather than any real logic, experience or reason.
The 206 is an average little family hatch, build isn't the best but the TU engine is time proven and generally reliable. It's very simple to work on, parts are reasonably priced they are cheap to insure and good on fuel. TU has been around a long time now, PSA wouldn't still be fitting it, if it was that awful. There are faults, (look on Google, I won't repeat them) but generally they're not "that bad" they're good value little cars and I'd happily buy a nice one for one of my family.
They don't rust unlike old Fords/Vauxhalls, the handling on them is typical PSA style with the torsion bar rear suspension, they're nicer to drive than a Fiesta, Corsa or Polo of the same vintage.
The French have always excelled in diesel technology, if it wasn't for the French you would not have diesel cars to any great extent, something to think on....... The French were making drivable, reliable diesel cars you could actually live with decades before anybody else. PSA are still leading the field in introducing new diesel innovations, and making engines for upteen other manufactuers.
If French cars are "so bad" why do so many cab drivers use 406s, there is even a 405 smoking around here with 400k showing,...
Some truth, but in most the crap you read about "awful French cars" is absolute nonsense, or hear-say repeated 100 times.

Andy, Id not touch the 206 - its a death trap. There were a number of television programmes about them and from our own family experience we found that there was a fault that Peugeot were unable to fix which was most definitely dangerous. Id never encourage anyone to buy that model.

Good Points
Looks quite nice. Easy to drive.
Bad Points
Continous problems with cutting out, stalling, "emission" light coming up sporadically on the dashboard, wheels squeaking, rattles, poor customer services from Peugeot, uncomfortable on long distance journeys.
General Comments
I've had nothing but trouble with my 206XSi. After the honeymoon period had worn off (after about six months) I have developed an intense loathing of my car and Peugeot in general.
The car revs up on its own accord (Herbie style) whilst the engine is supposedly idling (happens at traffic lights/junctions, etc). It will cut out completely for no reason what-so-ever whilst I'm driving down the street at a steady 30-40 mph. This of course is extremely dangerous .
I've took the car into Peugeot several times only to be told that they can't find anything wrong with it - and suggest that it is either my driving or I'm imagining it.....
I am not however, alone. I've spoken to other 206 drivers who also suffer from this problem. One girl told me her car had cut out whilst approaching a roundabout and duly caused an accident. I have recently discovered that the issue has even been brought up on Watchdog. Peugeot still refuse to accept that there is anything wrong with the car.
I'm stuck with a car that is a liability as I can't possibly sell something that could potentially put somebody's life at risk.
The shoddiness of the car is matched only by Peugeots customers services.
and another
Peugeot 206 ECUsI'm adding this thread purely as help to anyone who owns a Peugeot 206 which has or is behaving in, what can only be described as, a dangerous manner.
Our case begun about 6 months ago where, for no apparent reason, our 206 started to inexplicably lose power whilst travelling at speed, then immediatley pick up again, causing a jerking motion. Sometimes it wouldn't pick up again at all and grind to a halt. This was particularly dangerous when happening in the fast lane of a motorway. Other problems would include massive over revving whilst at a standstill, general stalling and jerking in slow moving traffic. Driving became very stressful (not to mention a bit of a lottery as to whether you made it home in one piece).
The thing is that when it was taken in to the dealer, they hooked it up to the computer which would show absolutely no fault at all, leading to a speculative diagnosis on each visit which invariably cost money (since the car was way out of warranty) for parts changed, which turned out to be unecessary.
To cut a long story short, our car gave out a crack on the way home from work one night, and the following mornign wouldn't start. It turned out that the coil pack had blown and spiked the ecu (the engines central computer). We had it towed to an alternative Peugeot dealer who's service manager told us it would cost about £1100 to fix. He seemed aware of this problem and agreed to fit a non Peugeot ecu if we bought one (for about half the price), which we did and all was and is now well.
Peugeot as a manufacturer still deny to this day that there is an inherent problem with their ecu's and this has lead to an online petition for 206 owners to lsit their cases - the results of which can be seen here - Peugeot 206 Online Petition
If you know of anyone with this problem or you've suffered yourself, take the time, as I did, to add your case to the growing list. Looking at some people's cases, it's only a matter of time before someone's killed.0
