We have a Peggy 206 as our second car, it's the 1.1 litre version, 53 plate.
Our other car is a Mondeo 03 plate, 1.8

Both cars were MOTd at end of July. Mondeo cost over £300, the Peugeot cost £57, that was the MOT price plus £3 to top up the coolant.

There are loads of these cars about, there's room enough inside them, not too small and cramped like smaller cars.

would I have one as our only car?

If I had to... but next car I buy would hopefully be another Toyota.;)

  • Agree about the French car thing, however a word of warning about the Toyota Yarris which I think is a great little car......Unless it's one of the batches that are built in FRANCE! These Yarris' have been known to have the same issues as Peugeot/Citroen/Renault, guess it's the way the things are put together.

I'm not planning on buying/viewing it. I wanted to know if the anti French car sentiment is wide spread. Lots of car people use MSE so it's a good site to research on!

I don't think people are being anti-French. Its just that all the evidence from websites which list the problems which cars have (Like honestjohn) and from satisfaction surveys shows that you are far more likely to have a problem with a Peugeot, Citroen or Renault compared to a car from a Japanese Manufacturer.

To be fair we had a bog standard 1.9 diesel one a few years back that just went and went. My friend had it and it's still going.

Perhaps that's the exception rather than the rule though.

My husband as well. He had a 1999 one from nearly new, took it to 130,000 miles and then sold it to a friend's sister who is still driving it three years later. It had it's moments and it sounded like a tractor (I could always hear him coming home!), but it never cost very much to maintain.

The one thing about Peugeot is they have beautiful colours :) But apart from that - the 206 was notoriously unreliable - in fact dangerous - have a google about it

    Just an example:

    http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/cars/peugeot-206-lx-1-4-5dr/1207326/

    Advantages: comfotable drive
    Disadvantages: it could kill you

Lovely looking car, great to drive but totally unreliable. If you own a 206 just wait for when the 'anti pollution' fault begins. The car will start cutting out for no reason, no diagnostic check will bring up any fault. It can cut out at any speed at anytime, mine cut out on me when I was doing 50mph on a corner, I lost all steering and most of my braking power. Originally the car would only cut out occassionally as I was slowing down and would start itself back up again, but it got progressively worse until the 50mph instant where it did not come back on until I managed to stop and restart the car manually, luckily this was before I drifted into the roudabout that I was approaching. I spend roughly £300 on parts for that car, none of which fixed the problem. Both pegeout and my local dealer accepted no responsibility for the problem.

You will spend hundreds of pounds on new parts that you don't need. This car is dangerous and a waste of money. And pegeout accept no responsibility for it. Try typing pegout anti pollution fault into google and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Summary: Do not buy this car!!

One of my sons actually had a 206 until it cut out as he went to overtake a lorry on a fast motorway. It had been cutting out and restarting for weeks, he spent hundreds at Peugeot "having it put right" and nothing ever worked. I made him get shot of it after that.

^^ Lambda sensors are a notorious Peugeot problem, they're made by Bosch specifically for Peugeot, but the problem is their location (screwed into the CAT in a vulnerable position) combined with rubbish electrical connectors that Peugeot have always used.

If people say "Stay away from French cars" then list why you should avoid them then of course it is being anti French cars. Nothing wrong with that if French made cars have the most problems.

You seem to like French cars, so buy one.

Personally I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.

The fitters at my local Renault Main dealers all drive Toyota's, Honda's etc, none of them drive French cars.

    That speaks volumes.

I would not buy a Peugeot, Citroen or Renault, not because they are French, but because they have such a bad reputation. They just happen to be French. There are other manufacturers who are as bad from other countries

    I am not anti-French car. I am Anti-Cr*p car

I didn't say I liked French cars. Why are people so combative on this forum? Can't even ask questions withlut people jumping down your necks or trying to find an argument! So silly.

Your post was based on a French Car, you seem to dismiss / ignore the advice given by many members, so I suggested you buy one, nothing wrong with that surely.

You asked for reasons why people didn't like French cars, I gave you one.

    Stop being so touchy.
