Sky, Virgin & BT TV Haggle down prices and get serious discounts Article Discussion

Be very careful when switching between providers. Two years ago I switched from Sky to Virgin using Virgin's 'no hassle' method. I was led to believe that Virgin would handle all the admin around transferring numbers etc and I would therefore avoid any pressure calls from Sky.
Virgin installed their equipment and I began using it. Approximately one month later I noticed that my bank account was £70 light. I realised that this was for Sky. I contacted Sky to confirm this was my final payment only to find that Virgin had not cancelled the service and that I still had to give one month's notice of cancellation to Sky!
From the response I received from Sky it was clear that I was not the only one who had been in this predicament. The customer service rep told me to contact Virgin. Virgin customer service was distinctly unhelpful and told me that I must have received a letter telling me to cancel Sky TV from the Virgin installers. I advised that this was not the case and that I would hardly have opted to pay over£100 per month for two TV services!
I wrote to both organisations, twice. Neither replied. I also contacted Virgin, as according to the deal I had access to free prints every month. No response.
My experience of both organisations is that they are all over you like a cheap suit until they lock you in, then you'd better get used to the sound of silence!
Factor in the length of time you're locked in to how much you actually use the package. Compare the the cost of TV, phone & broadband with phone, broadband free view &love film/Netflix.
how would a 3rd party cancel your account?
The free prints are in your 'my virgin media'

We are rubbish at haggling. We had Sky Sports, Movies, ESPN, HD and Multiroom. Paying a whopping £77.50 a month though. Phoned yesterday to try to get a better deal. We were offered same package for £67. We declined and ended up cancelling ESPN, Sports and Movies. Now paying £38.50 a month. I'm regretting it already. I'm going to miss the football. How long before Sky phone back to offer us some sort of deal? Or will they not bother as they're getting nearly £40 a month off us anyway?0

As you havent cancelled you probably wont get a phone call anytime soon. A deal on adding Sports again might land on your mat in a few months though.0

For anyone who is interested sky turned all my services off on 5th feb without any offers at all.
I have since switched to virgin and i am very happy so far,the broadband is soooo much better than skys. Anyway,i have to date received 6 letters from sky offering 50% off everything for a year since they cut me off. I am happy with virgin and under contract anyway so will not take sky up on their offer. However anyone who really wants to keep there sky just cancel and whether they offer you a discount or not once disconnected the offers will come rolling in, i get at least 1 letter a week.
Another tip if you have a laptop and good broadband then buy a 5m HDMI cable and link it to your tv. You will soon realise that sky sports, movies etc is a waste of money because you can watch the lot for free (if you look in the right places). Only downside being you cant record it.I am £438 better off a year since switching to virgin with faster broadband. Essential, tivo box,phone,30mb bb.0 -
To answer my own post, following my missed call on Wednesday evening I has a second call yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately I was at work and they told my daughter they would call back after 6.30 which they failed to do.
As I said earlier, my cancellation wasn't a ploy as I am probably going to Youview with BT. The Sky discounts do seem attractive though.
I had been a Sky subscriber since the early big dish days so I am a little surprised that they let me go so easily.
I am now a happy BT Youview and Netflix subscriber saving over £60 per month.0 -
Just to complete my cancellation experience, Sky never did contact me again and my service was cancelled 4 weeks ago. Since then I have not received any 'comeback' offers at all.

Me too. We have had no contact from Sky at all since we went off on Jan 5th/6th.
So contact from Sky cannot be guaranteed.0 -

I have a freview box and recorder in the bedroom but my OH " needs" sky sports and we have all the Disney channels and babytv for my toddler. So I would want an equivalent package. If bt are doing something soon would they used the dish or would it work thro the phone line0
