Can I just ask a quick question about Sky retention offers? I genuinely need to make cutbacks, currently unemployed, although hopefully not for too much longer.

I cancelled Sky TV a week or so ago and I'm obviously hoping to be offered the half price TV deal.

I currently have my line rental with Sky and Broadband with BT.

Yesterday, I decided to take advantage of the Plusnet half price Broadband deal if you take out line rental with £70.70 cashback through Topcashback.

I rang BT today to get my MAC code and was offered a rubbish retention deal.

My only niggling doubt is whether continuing to have line rental with Sky will help me to negotiate a better deal with them. But anyway, I doubt they'll be able to make me an offer that betters half price broadband for 12 months with the cashback. I know cashback isn't guaranteed but it has already tracked.

In case that makes no sense, my question is, does the half price TV offer depend on having other Sky services? Should I call Sky or just press ahead and give Plusnet my MAC code?

    Ta!

In my experience it matters not a jot with Sky. They know people tart about for new customer offers with phone and broadband. It should have no bearing on what they offer you in terms of TV package. Just in my experience mind.

Tbh, it might stand me in good stead for negotiating in a year's time if I only have TV (or nothing at all) with Sky.

Last year, I was offered a brilliant deal if I switched both phone and broadband to Sky. Unfortunately it wasn't an offer that Sky could actually follow through on because they don't offer unlimited bb in my area, only Connect, so I kind of ended up with my phone with them by default and kept bb with BT.

This is fun every year huh?!

i am moving into a new house on Monday. I have always lived in tied accommodation with all bills paid and have never had to make decisions like this before. Can anybody tell me what I need in terms of equipment, contract etc if I tell you what I would like.
I need unlimited broadband and a landline and a TV package that I can watch some extra channels especially drama and children's TV and I would like to be able to watch a programme after the kids go to bed at a time convenient. I don't even kn ow what HD is so don'#t think I need it do I? I'm hopeless at all this. SORRY!

If your after the full package I'd suggest going on a few comparison websites and simply searching for what you want. Sky are doing half price deals for the first 6 months (12 month contract) at the minute. Virgin Media have the far superior broadband and can work out cheaper. It's best doing a bit of research and comparing deals.

I would suggest that, you DON'T need HD (High Definition) TV - it costs an extra £10 per month (normal costs) on top of whatever package you choose
I would say - go for the bare minimum for starters - you WILL get an HD ready box, so you can always upgrade later.......
If you order through a cash back site (Quidco or similar) - you will get your first 3 months subscription effectively free !!
  • Phoned Sky on 6th February to haggle as got full tv package and have had since 1989. Also took out broadband and telephone last April. Pay £102 per month and £75 of this is for tv. After being grilled by Nicola and several long "hold" periods I was offered a derisory reduction in my monthly bill from £102 to £88.63! I stated this was not enough and to go ahead and cancel. Her attitude then changed and she was very curt to the point of being rude, stating "hows the rest of you're family going to feel without Sky"? She then put me on hold for ages while she sorted the cancellation and was obviously unhappy I was going ahead with cancellation. Do these advisors have targets and limits depending on what day it is or how much they have "given" away because read others have had 50% off.Maybe she thought I wouldn't go ahead. Was then was told I would have to pay another £2.50 per month on my phone & broadband bill for the pleasure of not having sky! I have read the other comments about this charge and understand why they state they charge this but it does not make it right. Sky squeezing as much as they can from customers. Needless to say unless they offer me 50% off cancellation will go ahead and phone and broadband will follow in April.

Good for you and go for it. The more people stand up to sky and realise it's not an 'essential' the better.

I got cut off Christmas Day fom sky, they did ring couple days before that and offer 50%. When cancelled they sent letter offering 50% again. Never answer the phone so don't know if they have rang recently. Just took out bt £5 months deal on tv, there is an activation fee but was going buy freesat box anyway. Can keep this after year still will work as freesat.

I rang yesterday evening as my package discount has ended and shot up to £85. I was told no discount was available and whilst the lady I spoke to was polite she just spent 20 minutes telling me the benefits of sky, which I already knew. In the end I just said that the blunt point was that I wasnt happy paying £85, so if sky weren't happy giving any discount it was time to part ways.

The answer was that there were no offers so I proceeded to cancel.

We only every record soaps anyway, all of which are on iplayer etc which we can get on out PS3 so its a no brainier.
