Our sky bill was coming in around £90 a month. We have the entire works including ESPN, broadband and a landline.

We phoned and try to negotiate our monthly bill down but they would only offer a 25% discount off the tv packages and this did not include the HD fee.

We decided to take a gamble and go through the cancellation process.

We were due to be cut off on the 10th May but received a call yesterday offering half price for 12 months. A good result.:T

Did this include 50% off the £10.25 per month fee for HD?

If you can live without sky, then hand in your notice and wait for them to call you. My bet is they will, but if not then you can always ring them up after disconnection and tell them you changed your mind.

Anyone who can't live without Sky needs a psychiatrist, not a discount.

Thought I'd post my success as well.

I'm with Sky on the Entertainment Extra package, with Line Rental and Unlimited Broadband. I was on the HD pack but cancelled that off as soon as I could as £10 was a lot for something we never really used. When I phoned up last night I got the bill from £40.25, down to £29 per month just by saying we couldn't really afford it and only wanted to keep the Broadband/Line rental going. I was asked a LOT of questions about what we watch, when we watch, etc. which seemed a little pointless to me, but after that the £29 offer was made and I took it. I could probably have done a bit better if I'd wanted to but going from around £50 (including HD) down to £29 is a decent saving and I'm happy with it.

Just for information, Sky advisors are trained to get a profile of the caller's and family tv use so that they can use that information to convince them not to cancel and what they would miss if they do, if you stick to your guns they make an offer which is available on your account, as I have said before there are teams in cancellations that are known as "no offers teams" and they have absolutely no offers to give, luck of the draw whether you get one of those advisors

Any offers of discount is on the TV package only unless you have specifically negotiated a discount on HD or multiroom, Broadband or line rental

I've just phoned up Virgin Media and was pretty disappointed with the offers I was getting.

Currently on 10mb, L TV and M phone which works out as £44.90 a month. I think Virgin's phone calls are really expensive and was looking to knock the price down by £10 to make up for it.

However, retentions couldnt even match the new customer offers.
New customers get 30mb, L TV and M phone for an average of£36.81 over 18months.

I was offered £37 for that deal, going up to £42 after 12 months + £49 for a new superhub. The woman claimed that this was with a £15 loyalty discount too!

I asked how I would go about leaving and said I'd have to think about the package. I don't particularly want to leave Virgin because I do like the faster speeds, but I'm pretty annoyed about the fact they don't seem to care about loyal customers (although I understand others seem to have had more luck)

Any tips on how I should move forward with this?
  • Have just called SKY to try and negotiate deal, I am currently paying £72.50 per month for Entertainment Package (Sports & Movies), HD and Multi-room subscription. Was very polite to the lady that answered the phone and said I was looking to reduce my monthly costs as everyone is nowadays, she put me through to "Customer Retentions", the guy offered me 25% off the Entertainment Package and free multi-room subscription for 12 Months, bringing the bill down to £49.25 per month saving me £280 a year, they wont do any haggling on the HD subscription. I tried to get them down further but that was it, he wouldnt even knock off the 25p per month!! My previous haggle (about a year ago) with them brought the package down to £47.50 per month, but only for 6 months, so I am happier this time!! :)
  • Just called Virgin on a whim to see what I could get, ended up saving £17 a month and getting a Broadband upgrade!

I didn't get anywhere the first time, they just wanted me to downgrade my TV package. The second time I said I wasn't happy with what they could do for me and I could save £20 a month with Sky, they stood to attention suddenly!

Richie... do you remember if the 12 months 25% off ties you in for another 12 months or not?

Am on the same package as you (minus multi-room) and wonder if they will do the same deal. It seems 25% is the standard deal (which aint bad) or sometimes you can get 50% if you do cancel AND they call you back before.

Phoned virginmedia up to get a better deal, what they offered was pi**poor,
currently paying £31 for 10mb broadband, phone with anytime calls aka 60min then redial,
offers, 1 told i already had the free upgrade to 20mb > wrong, did a speedtest this morning, still 10mb 1940750717.png
. but they could reduce the bill from £31 to £24.60, no change in service except for the free double your speed, and a new modem/router <didnt say whether i had to pay for it, which i have to put in, oh and to activate the new router i have to phone them, otherwise it wont work.
offer 2. £31, and get the above + basic tv. no vivo,
as all my tv's have freeview built in didnt see the point of having the tv addon.
disgusted considering what i would get if i where a new customer

just been to the myvirginmedia to check on something.
    quote "Planning to go wireless?

We've done all the checks and it looks like your current modem is fine. Your new super fast broadband is up and running at the speed shown below..

Your new speed is up to 20Mb

If you're going to be using a wireless connection then you might want to swap your modem for a Virgin Media Super Hub, our latest combined modem and router with the best range so you can enjoy fast broadband around your home.
The Super Hub comes free with just a £20 QuickStart fee for installation and you'll automatically begin a new 12 month contract."

wasnt told of any quickstart fee yesterday? does this apply to me.

We are currently paying ~£98 / month for full package (inc. sports & movies), line rental, unlimited calls, unlimited BB, HD & Multi room. Phoned last night to try and get a better deal, but after getting my life story about what we watch etc. the best deal they could come up with was reduced line rental for 12 months !! After 5 years of non-discounted subscription, a whole saving of £10 per month WOW !

So went ahead and give notice of cancellation and will be turned off on 8th June. Will just sit tight to see what will happen.
