Two weeks later I had a call one evening asking why I was leaving, told them "too expensive as my 50% offer ended"... the bloke gave me a new 50% offer for 1 year, no contract....
50% offers STILL EXIST... they are just making you work harder to get them, i.e. you have to actually give your notice and then ride it out before they come crawling back...
The call above where I got my 50% off was literally 3 days before my Sky was due to go off...
The above post is exactly right.
I gave 31 days notice...with 2 weeks to go I was called to see if there was anything they could do for me to get me to stay.
So basically told them I was interested in getting HD and Multiroom but it was working out cheaper on a deal Virgin Media had offered (Plus the availability of ESPN for free on XL Tv package with VM means I woudn't really feel the need to go full Sky Sports subscription).
Told them I didn't want to leave sky if it could be helped as I prefer their hardware/software and system, but they'd need to match VM's offer to keep me (or get very close to it).
She checked available offers and finally came back to me with Full Sky Sports package, HD sub and Multiroom sub (£2.50 for 12 months instead of £10.25) and the entertainment packages. This should have cost about £66 but she then applied a 50% offer on that for 12 months to bring me back down to £33. (The VM offer I quoted was £35 so she even beat that).
Also, 2 new shiny HD boxes are being delivered and installed on Saturday morning for no charge at all. Now I can sell my existing 2 sky HD boxes for money in the bank :jOctober Comp Wins -Stella Artois Challice (FB)0 -
Virgin's prices, particularly their telephony prices, are about to shoot up, big time - see HERE.From 1 April the following prices will rise:
- Daytime and evening calls are going up from 8.68p per minute to 9.94p (14½% increase).
- Talk Off Peak customers will see evening and weekend calls rise from 5.1p per minute to 6.1p per minute for the first hour (19.6% increase).
- Call connection fee up from 13.24p to 14.94p per chargeable call (12.8% increase).
- Talk Evenings and Weekends package up from £4 to £4.60 per month (15% increase).
- Talk Evenings and Weekend Local package up from £2 to £2.50 per month (25% increase).
- Talk Anywhere packages are also rising in price by up to £2.60 a month.
- The paper billing option is also going up from 1 April from £1.50 to £1.75 per month (16.66% increase).
Virgin Media broadband and TV rises
The monthly cost of some broadband and TV packages is going up from 1 April. Virgin says on average customers will see an increase of around £2.68 per month though the figure can vary depending on the package.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
WOW, I find Virgin very expensive anyway compared to the alternatives out there.... glad i'm not with them.A big believer in karma, you get what you give :A
If you find my posts useful, "pay it forward" and help someone else out, that's how places like MSE can be so successful.0 -

Does it matter what package you were on as we only have the ent extra pack. Do they priorise which people to call is it mainly high spenders with movies and sports?
when I cancelled they quoted me full price for same pack package - but after negotiating they offered me the same half price deal - thats extra pack, sports and movies pack - but extra for hd and multiroom - but I wasn't interested in paying £500 a year in the current financial climate.
I didn't get a callback but a month later i received a sky letter offering "half price sky" - now if you can wait a month - then give it a try.
But personally a month later I am not missing the sky service - with freeview hd, free satellite channels and multi channel iplayer services on ps3, there are plenty of viewing options..0 -
For info to anyone out there wanting to reduce their Sky TV costs. Just phoned to cancel for money reasons (wife no longer working) Currently paying £23.50. (no movies/sport etc) They offered me 25% discount first. (So this would work out at about £18 p/m) When I refused, they then gave me another option of £20 per month with new Sky+ box for 12 months and free broadband and telephone line for a year - Were also willing to offer me £20 per month for Sky+ on current package without telephone & broadband. I have cancelled anyway but for anyone looking to reduce their costs, worth a call to their Customer Cancellations Dept.0

Currently on the virgin VIP 50 plan and pay just over a 100 pounds per month.
Phoned them up 2 cancel phone and broadband and they couldn't offer me a deal...can't cancel TV as I go TIVO and am in contract until September.
Phoned up the other day asking if they will make a appointment to ate away my super hub and again the lady set no deals ae available for me, apparently I am on a good deal already so no discounts.
So looks like I virgin will lose a good chunk of my money when my broadband and phone get disconnected on the 23rd of this month

Wouldn't the current round of price rises give you a way to cancel without penalty?

If you want out completely, you could potentially cancel your cancellation, then phone later to cancel again due to the price change? A risk that they say no and you can still do as you have done above (so risk of paying a few days more).
