Sky, Virgin & BT TV Haggle down prices and get serious discounts Article Discussion

The remedy to this would be for Sky to get subscribers locked into its Broadband service. It knows you'll think twice about going through with a Sky TV cancellation if it means you'll also need to find another Broadband supplier. It's one thing to go cold-turkey without Sky TV for a couple of months; another thing entirely to go without Broadband for a couple of months.
Yup, I keep broadband separate for just this reason - just don't want them to have any leverage over me other than the tv service, which I can take or leave. It helps that I get a really good deal with AOL (or whoever they are nowadays) - been with them for 13 or 14 years without a hitch....so far.0 -

I could not agree more. The loss of freedom to switch media providers for the individual components of your media requirements far outweighs the small financial benefits gained from bundled deals.
Sky operates like an octopus. It uses two tentacles prominently to display posters designed to lure people into its grasp. It then gets hold of your nuts with a third tentacle, puts a fourth into your bank account and gets hold of your credit card with a fifth. It next uses a sixth tentacle to get hold of your television, a seventh to get hold of your broadband and its eighth to get hold of your telephone.
It then starts eating you and invites you to escape if you can.
The art is to avoid its tentacles sufficiently to enable you to cut off one or more them, fry it and get a meal out of the octopus, instead.Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance

I find it interesting that Sky, which was handing out 50% discounts on its TV packages fairly liberally prior to Christmas has now shifted its promotional emphasis to getting people signed up to its Broadband and 'Phone services, instead.
Sky must be extremely annoyed at the widespread exposure on MSE of the ways to obtain a 50% discount on its TV packages, by cancelling and waiting.

I must admit when we phoned to cancel they did try the old broadband trick. However when they said we could only have Sky Connect (£17 extra and no anytime +, slower speeds, unreliable etc) it was job doneHark at you going all strict0 -
I'm a sky tv customer, I pay £70.25 for 4 entertainment packs, movies, sports and multiroom.
I would love to cut this price down a little myself. I'm also planning on going with sky broadband phone and calls.
What could I do to get my price reduced?0 -
We currently have virgin media TV, phpne and broadband.
As of tomorrow we are going to be cancelling the TV, as we are spending too much a month on it. We will be okay to keep the phone and broadband won't we?
Am looking forward to saving £40 per month.January GC £33/200

I told Sky I wanted to terminate my contract about 10 days ago. I've not been with them too long - are they likely to come back to me pre-disconnection to offer me a deal - I've just came off my initial 50% off for 6 months deal - or do I need to go through with the disconnection?
Also, at the point of getting my 6 month discount I was told that a further deal may be offered upon expiry of the discount - this didn't happen. If I mention this to Sky am I likely to get the discount offered?0 -
I've been speaking to Virgin Media as I'm currently out of contract (been a customer for many years) and am paying £40 per month for BB L, TV L and Phone L. I was offered BB XL, TV M+ and Phone XL with 1Tb Tivo for £47 per month (plus the £49 activitation fee for Tivo). Taking TV L instead would be an extra £7 (even though the difference for new customers seems to be only £6!). Doesn't seem like too good an offer to me; a similar package from BT is £43 per month (with 40Mb BB instead of 30Mb) and Sky's package is £44.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated!0 -
same boat as a few on here. Just come off my second lot of 50% off and all they want to offer is 25% off. So i am now into my cancellation period and will leave if they dont want to offer me 50% off.
Have movies plus kids. The programs that will be mostly missed are the kids channels apart from that any other channel is rarely viewed apart from what is avaliable on freeview.
Save me some money though!!"Save the cheerleader - Save the world"0 -
When you talk of 50% off, how many months you had discount for or expecting?
50% discount for 3 / 6 / 12 months?0 -
Hi all, my dad has virgin tv, phone and broadband. He currently doesn't have the sports or movies but I would like to try to get this for him. Can any of you give me a good bargaining tool for getting even just the sports without paying full price??
Thanks in advance.0
