  • £250 off for this month - aiming to get another £750 in by the end of this week - so ideally, I'll have 2.5k saved this month, possibly upto 3k if everything's utterly optimal. Suffering from hayfever really badly tonight and today :(
Feb 2012 - onwards MF achieved
September 2016 - Back into clearing a mortgage - Was due to be paid off in 32 years in March 2047 -
April 2018 down to 28.00 months vs 30.04 months at normal payment.
Predicted mortgage clearing 03/2047 - now looking at 02/2045

Aims: 1) To pay off mortgage within 20 years - 2037
  • And another £250 off today. Normally, it's once a week, but I did last weeks overpayment yesterday, and this weeks today.

Wow your doing amazingly well OM! Well done.

Be careful that you dont start to wish your life away which is what I started to do. I learnt thats its obviously very important to overpay but still enjoy the here and now.

  • Cheers Sammye :) We have an agreement with my wife (MOM) that as it's an offset, we can happily shove everything at it, but also be willing to take it back out if we hit on hard times... So far it's been fine, as no major mishaps. Pleasantly, we're planning our holidays soon, somewhere warm and up market we're thinking for our summer, but where!? I'm trying to find good value:
Bulgaria - cheap but a bit lads abroad feel to the places (and cross referenced with trip advisor)
Turkey - has potential, could be v. pleasant, but seems to be cheap to get there (relatively) then normal costs of a European country which it semi is!
Of course there's ibiza etc, but they all seem a bit "crammed" and not much privacy. Why do I have such specific standards?! Any ideas on a great value summer holiday ((teachers holiday) so expensive from the outset)?
I've found that I end up looking at Egypt - Sharm El Sheik area, but am unsure if that's really what we want... For that we could almost afford Mexico.

  • I also have locked in my gas and electricity for the next year - Have until the end of the month to cancel if I see better, but have gone for a years fix. I feel gas and elec is going one way only and we're all in for a shock soon with rising bills etc. What's the consensus in what's going to happen?

I went Turkey (Bodrum) and found that is was very expensive (as much as London prices)

Well Ibiza is very beautiful and actually outside of the couple of bar streets in San Antonio is not all that cramped at all... hiring a car or moped you can pootle around the island and find all sorts of amazingly beautiful aqua marine-esque coves. I absolutley loved it there and thought it was an amazing island.

Egypt has never appealled to me at all to be honest always seems to look like a bit of a building site to me lots of cases of dodgy bellys.

My friends who I went Thailand with (thought that was one of the best destinations I've been to thought that Mexico was better despite the fact that everywhere you go everyone expects a tip.

  • Quiet few days, all I've done is:
    a) Online shop to be delivered tomorrow- have tried to go for the budget friendly brands to see if we notice a difference on veg.
    b) Am cooking for friends in the week rather than a meal out, as it'll be cheaper and I'm pretty sure nicer than a meal in the nearest pub - about 5 mins away.
    c) Have sat down with MOM and explained where I'd like us to go, in terms of savings over the next 12 months (ideally Mortgage free) and she's willing to work within the confines. What a wife!

  • I've given up! Getting a cleaner for the house. She came round today, and starts next week by cleaning the house top to bottom. Not money saving, but will certainly bring a lot of calm and clean to our house, which is money well spent. Will be a fortnightly clean once she's got the house up to her standard!
