I don't understand the point of this thread, was it just an observation while looking on eBay, or was it something the op actually wanted to purchase, if so then just find it elsewhere cheaper. Don't let it bother you and move on.

And, as has already been said, the postage for next day delivery is not outrageous.
  • If I see an item with ridiculously high postage it puts me off bidding. I will just find one with cheaper postage!

Ok - imagine this scenario. (I'll keep the maths simple!). Two identical items listed:

Item (a) for sale at £2.00, postage £3.99
Item (b) for sale at £4.00, postage £2.50

Which do you buy? I guess it would be (b) then...

I'd buy A and if postage was overcharged reflect it in their stars. However, many overchargers also try and get the same for their item, usually unsuccessfully and often end up with less net proceeds *and* poor feedback and trashed stars.

I've seen off many a rival who try and undercut me and hide their charges in the postage, they usually end up with such poor stars they are no longer visible in best match.

It's the same as 'free postage'. I was hazard a guess that most sellers do not offer 'truly free postage' - There is no such thing as Free P&P - Ask the PO if you don't believe me!! When ebay made certain catergories compulsary Free P&P, I (along with every other seller I have spoken to) simply reduced the P&P cost to zero whilst increasing the item cost by the same amount. A lot of sellers increased the item cost by more than the previous P&P price, as ebay were now taking FVF on the increased amount, whereas before they were not as it was in as P&P.

Yet the buyers still thought they were getting a good deal as you were offering "free P&P" despite paying more overall!!

That's because it saved them the few seconds needed to work out whether the 99p item they were about to buy was really 99p or whether it was 99p + £12.00 postage (because the unregistered business seller was trying to pull a fast one with the free listings).

Buyers aren't stupid enough to believe that free postage is genuinely free; they are however encouraged by seeing the whole price up front and it worked very well for me.

Yes and if it was me you bought from you would be in my bbl. Same as the OP would be, if she ASQed me.

I do not have to sell to you nor do i need to sell to you as i am in a niche market.

Its also not just postage there are admin fees.

i buy packing tape and envelopes by the pallet load.

jiffy envelopes cost round about 8p. Large plane envelopes cost less than 1p each. Tape less than 10p per roll. Packing tape is less than 20p per roll.

jiffys can be as much as 65p in the shops/p.o. Sellotape/packaging tape can be as much as £1. I pass none of the savings on to the buyer. AM i over charging the buyer?

I own my own large workshop/building i also load the postage with a percentage as if i was renting it. Am i overcharging?
I also do not pay rates. But charge a percentage on the postage.

I am 12 miles away from my workshop. I also add a little on for fuel. Am i overcharging?

You do not know how or what the postage/admin fees consist off and they may even be legit. Either way it should be irrelivent. All you should be interested in is the total price.

If you want to be a hero then buy the one thats FREE postage and is more expensive. Put your money were your mouth is so to speak. Or asq the seller(hopefully he will block you)

BTW Loaded Postage or free postage, We try to make all our items cheaper than our competitors were possible

john - calm down. You know you're going to get a lecture on which costs are factored in.
