Yes, caught up in trying to be 'nice' and 'so over it', it slipped out and I can't get out of it (cancelled once already).

What do I cook that's fool proof, says 'love child of Delia & Nigella', and can be 'chucked together after work, sorry if it's a bit of a state', but screams super woman.

As you can tell, I have some issues... :o

I'm thinking of:

Olives and such to nibble

a haddock chowder, as that always punches above the effort to make it, served with homemade bread (that just happened to be left over from my last batch;)). Pity I can't source a churn, I could produce hm butter :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

can't decide on a hm pudding that's simple, but vvv yummy.

I'm also going to be taking advantage of the tesco sale & stocking up on the most expensive wines I can afford.

competitive~moi? :D:D:D:D

Any help, ideas and even encouragement gratefully received :o

LondonDiva - you're a better woman than I am! Personally depending on how 'over' it you are I'd slip some laxatives in new girlfriends pudding - but that may just be me :D

I WAS only joking there :D

No seriously, one thing I have found is really nice when you're entertaining and ur having olives and nibbles for starters is get a really nice shallow dish/bowl, put in some really good olive oil and drizzle black treacle on the oil. If you have some really good ciabatta type bread this tastes surprisingly gorgeous and is lovely to dunk and nibble. Try it - I first had it at a REALLY posh restaurant and have done it for all my impressive foodie things ever since

Good luck and knock them both dead! ;)

  • i like the olive oil and treacle idea will try that out sometime! i love my baked camembert with homemade bread for a starter very easy too! just cut into camcmbert insert some fresh herbs, garlic and olive oil, wrap in tinfoil and greaseproof paper and stuff back into box and bake,
for pud how about a pavlova? very easy to make and always looks fab or brown sugar meringues are lovely served on a posh dish, maybe a nice cheese selection presented on a lovely board or platter with some grapes and celery sticks too, how about a desert wine if u are trying to impress they go beautifully with meringue! and port with your cheese of course, gosh youve got me started now!!! i will be drooling and thinking of food all day!!!! oh very simple but yum pudding!! put a few raspberriesw in bottom of glass, add greek yougurt sprinkle with brown sugar leave overnight and it will trun into a sticky dauce very nicce especialy if u put something on top to decortate maybe one of those sugar things u make by melting sugar till brown and drizzkling it on baking parchment letting it cool then peeling off and popping on top of pud at last minute looks quite dramatic! or flambe!!!!!!that should set things going!! chocolate fondu?! must stop now and do some work!!!!! jane

  • Keep it low fat, don't slog your guts out so she can simper and refuse pudding:D , Janeawej's idea of fruit & yoghurt is very tasty (I do it with kiwi fruit) and it looks lovely in a glass. (If you have a hand held blender you can make your own butter)
  • Why? How about serving up some home truths follwed by humble pie and a cocktail called 'taste of your own medicine'

  • just wanted to say i hope it goes well - i'm far too bitter and twisted to do anything that adult after relationships end :)

for a dessert, black_saturn's chocolate mousse tastes great and is really simple to make (it's a pint of cream - i used double but it's meant to be single, brought to the boil, mixed with plain chocolate). last time i made it someone asked where i bought it from! if you serve it with some sharp fruit or nice biscuits, it looks amazing (and can be made well in advance for less stress on the night)

  • I don't know anything about fish so can't comment on the main course. But I remember a friend serving really decent vanilla icecream with frozen *thawed!* fruits of the forest and the combination was just divine. I complimented her and she just said, 'thank you. I opened both packets myself'. LOL.

If you're looking for a starter, ready made puff pastry cut into circles with caremalised onion and crumbled feta in them are really easy and tasty.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

I have no suggestions but I just wanted to say thanks for the giggle, this is exactly the sort of deranged behaviour I'd expect from myself.

Do let us know how you get on! :rotfl:

Put double cream & butter in everything. ;)

But seriously, i know you want to impress, but I wouldn't be killing myself trying to get it perfect.
For pud you could do Eton Mess - no skill required. :D

I'd like to ditto Eels, I'd do this too just to prove something to muself:rolleyes:

How about a apple strudle or "parcles": apples are in season (do you have any orchards/wild trees near you?) just puff pastry or filo with stewed apples, sultanas, brown sugar, wrap artfully in the pastry & egg wash, the sprinkle sugar over after baking & serve with HM ice cream (I'd splash out on V. expensive ice cream & re-bowl & claim I'd made it:o) I'd echo the need for a decent dessert wine to be posh & always have a cheesebard for guests with port anyway.

    Good luck;)

Please don't mind me asking: why do you do this to yourself if you have 'issues'? You don't have to prove anything to anybody!

Personally I'd give HIM meatballs with ground glass in them, unless she has actively hunted him down and away from you, in which case I'd serve them BOTH the stuff, but that's only bitter ol' twisted me, the Italian psycho!

Good luck, let us know how it goes and please treat yourself well before, during and after the event, don't let it become an ordeal and if they say or do something out of order don't hesitate to chuck them out, you owe it to yourself and your self-respect!
