Supermarkets here ought to have a reward for finding OOD goods just like they have for overcharging.

Which supermarkets reward you when you're overcharged? My only experience of knowingly being overcharged was in Morrison's where they charged me an extra £7 for a bottle of whisky, to their credit the customer service woman just took my word for it and gave me the difference, but I didn't get any reward and they didn't seem to send anybody to go change the price on the shelf.

Tesco should give you double the difference and Asda are supposed to give you a £2 giftcard but you may have to ask for it.

I was in Morrisons on Monday and picked up 10 packs of ham/beef that had dates of 16th and 17th August...(it was 22nd) took them to the CS desk who called the manager and when they asked him if he had anythng to say to me by way of appology...he said "NO"...O well guess you dont get anything for pointing out an out of date item there then....

in asda they look at you like you're mad, tut and go yeah i'll sort it...

I'm always finding out of date stuff in most supermarkets and instead of being thanked they either look at you as if you have escaped from a secured unit or just shrug their shoulders and walk away.Even when I talk to the manager they don't seem to care.

....or, my favorite: "its not my department" and walks off.

A reward would just leave me speachless- I begin to think I'd be happy with a "thankyou"!

ha! I can't believe the attitude of some shops!! It used to be that Trading Standards would be able to give fines to supermarkets/food shops for having OOD stuff on shelves...probably still applies.

I worked for a well known store for 5 yrs and 3 of those were in food dept. I remember being told to 'pull forward' pushing the nearly OOD stuff to the front and the fresher stuff to the back. Whenever I shop esp for milk I always go for the stuff at the back...but I'm not vigilant about everything....will need to keep my eyes peeled if the comments I've read are anything to go by!

I HATE with a passion bad customer service...treat others how you wish to be treated is how I think...I've even kept smiling after having a basket thrown at me by a customer....oh the memories!!!

It is an offence to sell stuff that is past it's "use by" date, so trading standards could fine repeat offenders. My local Asda is terrible for out of date stuff, I almost bought a multipack of smoothies (not chilled ones) then noticed them & all the boxes around them were a month out of date, I told a nearby shelf stacker who said he would deal with it, went back about 3 week's later & they were still there!!! Got 2 passing assistant's explained that they 80 pack's of kid's smoothies were a few month's out of date & that I'd pointed it out to someone 3 week's before, they got it sorted straight away & told me to tell customer services , who took a big note of what had happened & all my contact details , I've never had so much as a thank you. Most of the Asda staff I've come across seem lovely & helpful, but I don't think corporate Asda know the definition of customer service.
    Booo!!!

    Lol- you sound like me!!

I have worked a good few (too many) years on frontline retail, most of those years at minimum wage, the others £1 over minimum wage. You learn how simple good customer service is, its so basic, so fundamental yet so few staff in stores I will not mention, chose to use it. It annoys me that they do not use simple good manners when its so easy!

Would love to shop the shops to Trading Standards but I think they still wont change- the lack of good customer service just says it all: they do not care, not about the customers (but also included) they don't care about the company and having TS visit and threaten the store with legal action would have little affect on their wage.

I did quite well out of Tesco last week. Their dine in on Tesco Finest for £9. Well the wine on its own was £9.99, so I thought 'I'll have some of that' and took my pick from the selection. I checked my receipt when I went through the till, only to find the reduction for the £9 dine-in hadn't been taken off. Off to customer services, she went to look at the chiller cabinet. When she got there, apparently the shelf fillers were changing all the offers over, some of what I'd picked up had been dropped off the offer, though I wasn't to know it. I ended up getting double the difference back, no questions asked - £20.68!

As far as out of date food is concerned, I had to point out in Tesco to 3 different people before anybody would do anything about it, on one occasion, that they had eggs on sale that were weeks out of date.

I work for Sainsburys. If somebody comes to me with an OOD product for refund, I 99% of the time give goodwill as well as a refund (£2 to 5 or more depending on the scenario). The option is on the till, it just isn't given by default. To be fair, I don't think some of the staff understand how to use some of the refund codes! It's not company policy (AFAIK) to offer goodwill. Some staff at my store do offer goodwill, but some won't, so it's hit and miss.
