I find it hard to believe that member of staff would disclose a medical condition of a colleague to a customer, wouldnt that be confidential information?
Anyway, OP, have you made a complaint or gone back to see if he's the same with other customers?0 -

Whilst medical information is, of course, confidential. I think that if the till operator genuinely does have Tourettes then the other staff would naturally discover pretty quickly!"Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?" (Douglas Adams)0 -
I count emotions the same as '!' and '?' in that they end the sentence.
Sentences end with full stops, exclamation marks or question marks. Not little smiley faces.
In future you're going to go to the trouble of pointing out someone's lack of proper punctuation then it would strengthen your argument not to make such mistakes in your own posts.
Otherwise you look a little bit silly.

OP, If I were 'happy in my own skin' whatever I'd had done to it, I'd just ignore any comments from others....whether they had disabilities or not. I've a female friend who is 18 + stone and has tattoos and piercings literally coming out of her ears and wears revealing tops, she loves the comments...good or bad. She happily engages with the people who comment.0

Thanks, everyone, for all your comments.
I did think it was a bit odd that customer services were disclosing medical information but several people on here have mentioned that it doesn't sound like tourette's.
I'm wondering if it's possible that he does have a genuine medical condition that affects his social skills and mean that he speaks his mind very bluntly with no understanding that what he's saying could be offensive. (Some kind of autism or aspergers maybe?) And most people have heard of tourette's syndrome, so it does make sense that the woman from customer services would leap on tourette's as an short, snappy, convenient answer to give to complaining customers, rather than going into a long explanation about his medical problems. And yes, she did say there had been a lot of complaints. As soon as I said I was calling because someone had been rude to me, she asked me if it was the guy on checkout 11. So she guessed from the first few seconds that it was him.
This line of thought is what concerns me about writing a letter of complaint to head office - they may get heavy handed and fire him. It's appropriate if he was being deliberately obnoxious, but very wrong if he genuinely didn't mean to be offensive. If he didn't, the responsibility lies with the person who decided he'd be OK on a till, but I'm quite cynical and tend to think the guy himself would be held to blame and the manager would escape scott free.
The economy is bad and jobs are scarce - if he does have a genuine medical condition, finding a job would be tough enough for him, but being fired for gross misconduct would make it next to impossible for him to find another job. It wouldn't be fair to punish him like this if he genuinely can't control his mouth.
I think I'll keep it at store level for now, and write a polite letter asking for feedback on my verbal complaint, and if they can guarantee in writing that I won't be called names again if I end up at his checkout. I'll also emphasise how nice all their other staff are.0 -
I call Shennigans on this post.
New account, created this morning.
Rang a supermarket and the checkout supervisor answered.
Supervisor went on to laugh about your complaint
Popular, but wrong, description of Tourettes
Sorry, but I think someone is writing fiction.0 -

Sorry, but I think someone is writing fiction. If at first you don't succeed, maybe bomb disposal isn't the best career choice.0 -
Why didnt you simply tell him to fook off?Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0
