    why should they discriminate

it's not discrimination if they can justify it.

It's not discrimination - he is not medically fit to work on the checkout.

Look, with the best will in the world it simply is not possible/appropriate for people to always be given a toallly free choice of where they want to work. Unfortunately, some people do have disabilities and, while I have every sympathy for them and would want them to be given every possible chance to live life to the full, there are some things they can't/shouldn't do. It isn't discrimination in the true sense of the word to put a person who is clearly not able to deal with customers face to face in a 'background' position. Its being sensible - and also kinder to the person concerned as forcing someone with a bad case of Tourette's to deal with customers surely will cause them embarrassment, distress and hurt. They know themselves what is happening and would want to avoid it if they could.

Doesn't sound like this guy has Tourette's though - possibly some per personality disorder or Asbergers. He shouldn't be on the till though - customers have the right to be treated politely !!!
so we should stop blind people from being front of house so to speak or those with limbs missing cause who wants to see that when they go shopping eh regardless of disability he should be givebn the chance to work in whichever role he wishes ok hes a little abrubt with some customers and maybe thats needs curbing

Did you know, there are things on your keyboards called commas and fullstops?

You can press them you know, they're not going to blow up your computer

You clearly didn't read the OP's post. Being downright rude and abusive isn't the same as being abrupt. In the light of this, your other analogies are wrong.

It does make it easier for people to read, surely you don't want people to skip your posts due to them looking barely literate ?

One of our produce (fruit and veg) colleagues is registered blind and has about 50% vision in one eye. Other eye he had a ruptured retina and the operation to fix it failed. He gets on with job and customers respect him and he always give sugguestions on what do with fruit and veg.

As others have said a verbal tic will be an incoherent stream of words, not a coherent sentence specifically about you. Verbal tics are pretty rare as well, they're usually physical tics. And even if he did have Tourette's, you would expect him to have apologised and explained to you that he had the condition. The fact he was grinning at you the whole time suggests to me he's having a whale of a time being rude to people and getting away with it- after all, the majority of people with verbal tics find them an embarrassment, not something to have a laugh about.

I agree with tbw that assuming he did have Tourette's, both him and his employer would agree he'd be better off working away from customers, for his sake and the customer's. Personally though I don't think he has any problem. It sounds to me like that South Park episode where Cartman gleefully insults everyone claiming he's got Tourette's so he can get away with it.

I'd definitely write a letter of complaint if I were you, and send it to head office as the staff there clearly don't care.
