  • Well I've made my decision and I'm going with the dmp organised through the cccs. All my creditors should have the paperwork tommorow so I'm expecting some irate/pushy phonecalls any time now from them anytime now! Most of them only have my mobile number now, so at least i can filter some of them. I did give a covering letter with my cccs proposal asking that they do not contact me for further payments as waht is being offered is all I can afford, but I'm expecting this to be ignored.

In my letter to my bank I also asked that they take a look at the disproportionate charges they have made on me in the past (and quite recently) and that I am looking to pursue this matter further. You never know...

I just hope they all accept the initial terms and I can just get on with my life and paying this off.

Anybody else on a dmp have any advice of what to expect, what happens next and if they have had any further problems past this intial proposal stage? Would be greatly interested in hearing your experiences, especially with regards to default notices, ccjs and debt collection agencies whcih are the things that most worry me at the moment :(

Just hope I can get some sleep soon when this is all sorted. Have felt absolutely drained of life recently.

Still not sure I made the right decision, I guess only time will tell, but at least a decision has been made and the ball is now rolling or you could say the ball is in the creditors side of the court. I don't know if I'm not more worried now than I was before.

Will let you know how it goes, but fingers crossed for me.

Thanks for you thoughts and consideration in this rough patch of my life.

    Kindest regards

    Hi DD,

You’re not the first to go through this sort of mess and you certainly won’t be the last. I realised that we were in a hopeless financial situation in Feb / Mar of this year and contacted CCCS. It’s very complicated because there was a business involved and all sorts of guarantees, security and uncertainties about whether we could sell the business or not.

I blamed myself and had exactly the same thoughts about my wife and children being better of without me; believe me they won’t, for one thing any money payable from your insurance polices, if they’re not invalidated by suicide, will go to repay your debts. You have got to tough this one out, and it will be absolutely purgatory but it will get better.

There are lots of people on here who will offer good advice but from my experience I would do the following:

    1. Stick with CCCS and follow their advice, they’re excellent. Forget all about any other private insolvency practitioners, they only charge for what CCCS do for free.

    2. Write to all your creditors informing them that you’re working with CCCS and offer to pay a token £1 and completely ignore their squeals and threats.

    3. Continue to pay your mortgage, council tax, and utilities and nobody else.

    4. Change your phone number and go ex directory and don’t give your new number out.

    5. Don’t let pride get in the way of resolving this problem; I had to bite the bullet and sell a Subaru Impreza Sti that I’d had from new. If you’re a car guy you’ll appreciate that was like being castrated.

    6. You’ve got to be honest with your OH and tell her exactly what the situation is and keep her informed as things develop. I’m not a touchy feely weepy sort of guy, and if my Father had seen me grovelling and snivelling when I confessed all to my OH he would have beaten me black & blue.

    7. If the worst comes to the worst and you have to face bankruptcy it’s not the end of the world. We fought bankruptcy like crazy but were ultimately forced into it by a business creditor that just refused to deal with us. It’s been very tough and we’re not over it yet but things are certainly starting to improve; we can at last sleep all night and have a laugh.

Stick with it, by the sound of it you’ll get to keep your house and in six months or a year you’ll look back on your current situation as a much wiser person.

    All the best,

    Rich

I was touched by your advice to desperatedad and just wanted to say, 'well done' to you for getting yourself sorted and being so brave. I'm sure your words of encouragement will help a lot of people.

desperatedad - Good luck! You will look back at this time in your life one day and say 'I did OK there'..........
  • Hi all, not sure if any of the people who previously have responded to this post ever look back through it, but my thanks to you all for your support.

Its early days yet, but cccs have already started processing my stuff and calling my creditors, sounds like my first dmp payment is going to be beginning of october, so thats super quick.

Had a call from the garage that are looknig at my car at the moment and its well and truly !!!!!!ed and the estimate is over half the cars value and I just don't have the money to pay for it, so a bit screwed there, but I may try and sell it for parts or something and just cut my losses.

I've been getting 3-4 calls a day for the last few days already. Keep telling them the same thing, but they keep phoning back! Makes me feel quite sick and guilty. One of them even mentioned the word 'bankruptcy', but I said I didn't have an equity in the house so they wouldn't get a penny out of that if they pushed for it, so stick that where the sun don't shine, its this dmp or nothing!

Haven't had much post yet which is a surprise, I guess they prefer the immediacy of the phone calls, but I guess as soon as they find themselves going round in circles there they will start with the threatening letters :(
