    1) we can do a press release about our activities :)
Yes, why not ? The bumph is ready, get it sent, sit back and see what happens.

    2) we can do a 'hardcore' planner for joel
You can, but no rush, is there ?

    3) we can add nutrition boxes to each recipe
Now, that's a really good one, and I'd say a priority over Joel.

    4) we can add more articles enhancing the teaching to fish parts of the site, like juliettes idea for an article on how to frugalise a recipe.
I think that's my first choice out of all the options :)

OK, well my suggestion for moving forward with that would be that we have a writer/collater as hayley has been for us in the past and all say our recipe frugalising tips, and then the writer needs to just merge them together?

  • Just a tip for the press release - why not do the article as you want it, but include in the package several nicely formatted recipe (with pictures) that you wouldn't mind papers printing alongside the website details, for "general use", and to show the quality of the recipes, a very brief version of the article (for news feeds), and any "success stories" people have already sent (with permission to publish, of course).

A potted biog of Weezl and her "core team" might also add interest. If you basically wrap lots of interesting stuff up in one big bow, you're more likely to get some of the press biting and using various sections. Just be sure to scatter the URL liberally throughout!

    ok I'll start :D

for me the biggest breakthrough in frugalising recipes came with a greater sense of which are usually the pricy ingredients in a recipe and then having enough understanding of the chemistry of a recipe to frugalise them. So now I look at a crumble recipe, and know that the fruit and the butter are the two killers, so those are the ones I look to knock down.

I also found it very enlightening to look at the ingredients list on shop bought foods.

For example, by studying shp bought flapjack ingredients, I realised that oil is often used in place of most or all of the butter, which is a very helpful frugalisation.

I do sourdough. If making bread I put in 26 oz starter (which would consist of 10oz flour and 13oz water) for a four loaf batch and reduce the flour and water accordingly. I also add a small amount of yeast because otherwise sourdough is quite heavy. (But I also do wholemeal rather than white flour so if you're using white flour you may not need it.) (I'm also assuming you're doing equal volumes of flour and water in your starter i.e. 100% hydration - the figures would be diffferent if you weren't.)

I have never done it before but am using american measures as the site is american and I actually find the cup measures easier to do. It is wholemeal and I am using equal flour and water. It is only myself and my housemate at the moment so 4 loaves sounds immense! It certainly seems to be developing at the moment though, day three and it has produced the 'hooch' on the top. I am by nature an experimental cook so I am enjoying the science of it all, will have to let you know how it turns out. What does it taste like? I am also going to try using it for sourdough pancakes as I hear they are amazing!

I really like this idea! I think frugality is much more popular these days and there are often articles in the weekend magazines in newspapers on making your own/growing your own/reducing your spending. Are you willing to be part of the product? I mean one of the most compelling things about this project is you yourself. If you release it to the world people may want to know more about you, pig head shaving and all. You are a character, a brilliant one, and I wonder if you would find it difficult if too much focus was on you rather than Shirley or Kitty.
    2) we can do a 'hardcore' planner for joel
I can't believe we are still calling him Joel, sorry folks, I just really like the name
    3) we can add nutrition boxes to each recipe
Ooh, sounds good for our critics to see but will it help those the plan is for as much? Hmm, sounds very labour intensive for you
    4) we can add more articles enhancing the teaching to fish parts of the site, like juliettes idea for an article on how to frugalise a recipe.
I would imagine that this is the part that the rest of us can help more with?

You have done so much, I hope you are really proud of it :)
God is good, all the time

  • Hi, had a look at your site and am very impressed by the recipes! Looks very good too.

Just one question - how are the carrots prepared in this recipe or am I missing something?

I really am. And I'm so proud of getting kitty out there I have treated myself to a hot stones massage in an hour. I'm so excited :)

sorry to all for being monstrously unfrugal there!

I believe they are grated, SS :) Least that's the way I did them when I tested the recipe :D
