Hey all,
Have been away for a week and shall try and catch up with the chat at a later point.
Hope the meet went well
We have had some more e-mails to the CFR address, some very positive feedback about the bacon and onion pudding and some questions about freezing and how to do so with certain recipes.God is good, all the time

I can help with freezing advice but you would have to send me the questions.business mortgage £0))''(+ Barclay's business kitchen loan £0=Total paid off was £96105 PPI claimed and received £13527

Tomato-based recipes are often surprisingly high in F&V portions. One regular tin (400 g) contains five portions all on its own, and it only takes 20 g of tomato puree to add another one. 40 g of dried lentils (or other pulses) is also a portion in its own right (although the UK restricts the quantity of pulses which can count towards the total).
Thanks Avocet, I understand how it's been worked out now. I thought you had to have 80g portions of five different fruits & veg; I didn't realise you could count tomatoes, for example, twice in one day. That does make things easier!0 -
Here's what I did with some of my CFR leftovers.
Calzone dough, amatriciana, calzone tomato sauce, and bits out of my fridge and cupboard.
Calzone dough+marg+garlic+cheese = cheesy garlic rolls
Pizzas
DH - tomatos sauces, bacon and cheese
Mine -tomato sauces, roasted red peppers, sundried tomato
Nothing for Katie as Grandma and Grandad had filled her up on ice cream, crisps and biscuits so she just had a little grazing plate of veggies and cheese.Proud to be dealing with my debts

hi Jan,
the only things that the NHS 5 a day site say can't count more than once a day are pulses and fruit juice.
Also they don't need you to get a full 80g of each different veg, just totals of 80g IYSWIM, ie in this recipe here:
http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/5ADAY/Pages/Recipes.aspx
no one is getting a full 80g of onion, mushroom etc, but as a whole they are.
This is the same principle we adopted since NHS is a pretty reputable site:)
I think you're right that this method is much easier to apply since you don't have to then slavishly use recipes with exactly 80g of everything.
I can add these answers (+ Avocet's) to the nutrition FAQ's page if that'd be helpful?

Just a quick heads up to all Asda shoppers - their strong white flour (the one that Shirl and Kitty both use in their planners) is now down to 50p, so this is a good time to stock up0

Just cooking the nut roast and spotted an omission in the method, it doesn't say when to add the beans, I'm assuming that they go in with the rest of the ingredients.Proud to be dealing with my debts

have had another little experiment for Shirley
I was looking through In Praise Of The Potato to see if I could spot any good recipes for Shirl when I came across one for crisps
Jason and Jenny might be feeling crisp deprived on the meal planner, so I thought I'd have a go and see how they came out.
They were lovely, this is them
it's just as well I took a picture when I did, I tried a couple, showed them to DP and he said, hmm, these are nice, and scoffed the lot!
Anyway, if you're interested, this is the recipe
Crisps
peel as many potatoes as you want to turn into crisps, I used half a medium one, which was 50g, just to try them
then slice them very finely. I used the biggest side on a box grater, sort of like a mandolin. They need to be wafer thin, so you can see through them.
swish around in a bowl of cold water to remove the starch, then blot dry. I used a combination of a tea towel and a bit of kitchen paper
place one by one in very hot oil to keep them separate and let cook until brown. I used a very large frying pan as it had a good surface area. Lindsay Bareham says about 2 minutes, but mine didn't take that long, I would say more like 1 minute. Quickly remove with a slotted spoon as they turn brown and before they get too brown and drop onto more kitchen paper to blot the excess oil. Sprinkle with salt
Lindsay says uneaten crisps can be kept in an airtight tin. On this first attempt, there were one or two that were a little soft, so you need to make sure they were all very crisp I think if they were to keep
this cost the huge sum of 2p for the potato and a little oil to fry them in, haven't worked out how much the oil was
Lindsay says that at least half the price of a pkt of crisps is profit, and they are vat rated too. Wonder if we could work out a way to flavour them with anything else
I think if I was going to make a big batch, I would try and get a production line of swishing and drying going on0 -
we had a WI function a little while ago and went to the Tesco deli counter for some olives, pate etc.
the woman there took a liking to us and rummaged in her fridge for some olives that had to be used that day and sold them to us for half price, plus the same for a huge chunk of salami and a whole Ardennes pate (worth an ask then!)
the pate came in those black packages, that look like a small loaf tin, but are made of thick plastic
she asked if we wanted any of the tubs, and not ones to look a gift horse in the mouth, we said yes please, and she gave us 17 of them!
so we now have 17 good quality plastic tubs 7.25"/18.5cm x 4"/ 10cm and 3"/8cm deep, and not much idea of what to do with them!
Anyone got any inspiration?0
