Butternut squash grown from the saved seeds of the first BNS I bought to test out Shirl's first BNS risotto - this little blighter has been with us almost from the very start, and has grown while seeing us grow
Birdseye chiilies (grown from a supermarket chilli seed, now in their second year of cropping)

These are the results of an experiment to see if waffles can be made without a waffle iron:
Starting it off:
Wet ingredients, mixed:
Waffle batter:
Cooking it crumpet-style:
Cooking it pancake-style:
The end result:
The verdict ? Yes, they sure can - you might have some trouble persuading your human guinea pigs that they indeed are waffles, honest - cos if they look like a pancake, and taste like a pancake.... A waffle they ain't !0 -

the woman there took a liking to us and rummaged in her fridge for some olives that had to be used that day and sold them to us for half price, plus the same for a huge chunk of salami and a whole Ardennes pate (worth an ask then!)
the pate came in those black packages, that look like a small loaf tin, but are made of thick plastic
she asked if we wanted any of the tubs, and not ones to look a gift horse in the mouth, we said yes please, and she gave us 17 of them!
so we now have 17 good quality plastic tubs 7.25"/18.5cm x 4"/ 10cm and 3"/8cm deep, and not much idea of what to do with them!
Anyone got any inspiration?
Home made microwave meals and puddings taken them out before heating. Freezer storage for left overs. Bath boats for the childrens bath time assuming they will float. That all I can think of right now.Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.0 -
We've just had the sweetcorn fritters for a light lunch with pickled courgettes from the garden (omitting the potato wedges, and using tinned sweetcorn instead of frozen). They were OK, but the children don't like them as much as the sweetcorn fritters I used to make them when they were young (with egg and milk) because they weren't as crispy. Sorry, but these weren't really a hit for us. If I found myself in a position where I only had these ingredients in the house, I'd rather make flatbreads with the flour and water, and roll them up with a filling of fried spiced onion and sweetcorn. The fritters were OK and perfectly edible, but lacked something -- perhaps frying them in more oil would make them crisper? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I am not part of your testing team so I hope that it's OK to post a recipe question.
I am about to make the onion tart tatin and can't see any mention in the recipe of when to add the instant oat cereal. Is it added along with the flour?
Does it serve an important purpose? If not will some extra flour do just as well?
I don't have any (and don't fancy buying such a thing) - does it mean wizzed up porridge oats?0 -
Hi Wendy,
Of course it's alright to ask questions - and we'd be very happy if you popped back on once you've had your tart and let us know how it went
The instant oat cereal should go in at the same time as flour. If you haven't got any, extra flour will do just fine. The reason that instant oat cereal is included in this recipe and some others is because it is very rich in calcium, and for people who follow the planner in full, an important part of reaching their calcium RDA. If you are just having an odd recipe here and there, and your diet contains plenty of other sources of calcium, then the oats do not serve a very important purpose to you, so it's fine to leave them out0 -
Lesley, I dug through my recipe books last night looking for further uses for crabapples, and here's what I came up with:
herb jellies
rowan & crabapple jelly
elderberry chutney
black jack jelly
hip & haw jelly
and while I was at it, these also look good - not for crabapples, but other foragers:
sloe jam
candied chestnuts
rosehip syrup (a possible alternative for Shirl's waffles, Weezl ?)
If you - or anyone else - want me to post any of these recipes, just let me know !0
