Hmmmm. Not sure I fancy the idea of the "little-known use" at the end of the article!

Actually, now that I come to think of it, I might have eaten garlic granules before. We quite like this (with olive oil and pasta):
    http://www.seedsofitaly.com/product/851
and I think that it must contain garlic granules.

I've googled it but can't see an ingredients list.

Was wondering about putting one together, for our standalone recipes section.

edit: aha! found it here- wow I think that has great frugalisation potential :) many thanks avocet :)

It's nice stuff. We usually do our own, with chilli flakes and fresh garlic, but the Ariosto mix is really handy (and useful for seasoning other things, too) so I have started using that instead.

If you're on the lookout for future new recipe ideas, this recipe caught my eye recently. I haven't made it, but it looks quite frugal as it is, and certainly ripe for further frugalisation:

Ironic that the site is called "lovepotatoes", given that I dislike the things and was looking for recipes to disguise them, but there doesn't seem to be one called "hatepotatoes"! :-)

wow! I wish I had a kitchen right now avocet what a great potentially very frugal pud :)if ever you have chance I would be most interested in your rough amounts of the chilli, garlic oil and pasta for that meal :):A

edit ps that's annoying about the potatoes :( I've been most surprised by how much more powerful nutritionally they are than other carbs, and am trying to include them MUCH more often myself!

what are allegra and all the testers making tonight?

kitty and family eat 38 loaves of bread in the month, and so the 5 batch loaf is approx 4 days worth. I hear that 5 loaves is a large batch and tricky. My worry also is that with that amount of bread making she'll value gatting a few lined up for the week? I'm tempted to suggest a half quantity as you have said, will that be a step too far in terms of labour for her?
I've been thinking about this. I make bread regularly, and have done for years. If I had made this recipe as my first attempt, I doubt if I would have done it again because the effort (and expense, if you don't own five loaf tins) was mammoth. A smaller batch is much less daunting. However, I can absolutely see your point in trying to reduce the number of baking days in the plan.

How about offering two versions (on the same web page) -- a half quantity for readers of a nervous disposition or with a paucity of loaf tins, or who are picking and choosing recipes rather than following the full plan to the letter; and the full batch for those who want to reduce the number of baking sessions.

The recipe is really good. It's just that I found the quantity of flour to be unmanageable -- its probably fine if you are blessed with massive mixing bowls and big arm muscles. Don't change anything just on my opinion; everyone else may find it easy.

We had the bread for lunch today, spread with herby goats cheese and served with courgette soup, and it really is yummy. I will definitely be making it again.

I'm waiting for the Shepherdless Pie to come out of the oven, and hoping that I'm on the same page as all the other testers tonight, rather than two days out of sync! :-)

Hi not being very frugal today made a delicious ice cream type dish today but thought that someone here might be able to frugalise it a bit. Here is the recipe for anyone who wants to try however be warned it it very moreish.

    1 can condensed milk
    600ml cream whipped up
    100g chocolate chips melted
    small bag maltesers chopped (optional)

Add the condensed milk to the whipped cream and stir. Fold in the choc and maltesers anddpour into a container. Freeze for 5-6hours or overnight.
This is a very creamy dish and isnt a cold as ice cream. I omitted the maltesers and didnt melt the chocolate. Hope you enjoy or someone can make it a bit more frugal i look forward to hearing some thoughts xx

We had the shepherdless (or is it shepherdess - did we ever decide?) pie tonight. The flavour was very good. However, the potatoes didn't "stick" to the rest of it, so our plates just looked like they had a big pile of veg and lentils on them. If I made it again, I would top it with mashed potato and brown under the grill I think.
Probably a 5 out of 10 as it stands, which might improve to a 6 with the mash. I didn't take a photo as it didn't look that appetising!!
I also thought it was a bit longwinded to make, so would perhaps reserve it for a weekend in future, rather than after a hectic day at work.
We ate it all so no leftovers to play around with, but would think that if there was some spare it might turn into a tasty soup.

I was supposed to be cooking the calzone... but have spent most of the day at the biddies, doing odd jobs for them.
    I haven't eaten yet :(
So I think it will be something quick from the freezer... maybe even bean curry again :D... will have a delve and see.

I went out for a walk early with a friend, to see how the brambles are coming on, in my area. A couple are ready... but I reckon it will be another week or two before they are ready.
On the plus side, I found some wild raspberrys :j, not alot, as the season is almost done... but at least I know they are there for next year:cool:. I probably have 2 or 3 portions :D

Anyway, off to raid the freezer.
    TTFN :D

I had a tremendously frustrating day today trying to bring the lappy to something approcahing working order again, and only managed to get online now. So I'll update on the shepherdess pie, dish scoring, life, garlic granules, blackberry muffins, bread batches, life, universe and everything - tomorrow.

I'll just leave you all with a happy thought instead - that walnut spread has to be one of the nicest things I've ever eaten. I am having serious trouble stopping myself from finishing the jar in one sitting :)

I know how you feel Allegra... finding more and more things that needed to be done at my parents.
I do believe it is my own personal Forth Road Bridge, sorting out their stuff :rotfl::rotfl:

Anyway... I will now HAVE to try the walnut spread ;)
I found a cheeky quorn something or other done in lemon and pepper breadcrumbs, in the freezer, with some HM frozen wedges, and salad. And that was dinner :D

Smashing.... off to do something destuctive of my own now :rotfl::D
