mardatha, elmlea contains 26% hydrogenated oil. The health issue suggested with this type of oil is that they reduce the levels of good cholesterol in our bodies and raise the level of harmful cholesterol. Cholesterol is one of the factors implicated in coronary heart didease, and diet is one of the 8 factors which can lead to a harmful level of the 'bad' type of cholesterol.

    I hope that helps :)

mardatha swapping to this would reduce those fats to just under a third of the normal double type:

Weezl, thats what we are using now. Is that ok then? I thought you both meant steer clear of all Elmlea alternatives. Sorry to hijack the thread !

hmmmn, well I'm not an authority to talk to mardatha:o, but 7% hydrogenated fat wouldn't personally worry me, as long as I had enough sources of bad cholesterol lowering agents in my diet. I uderstand that oats are particularly good at reducing the amount of harmful cholesterol in the blood?

my brother is a GP and I'm due to chat to him tonight/tomorrow, I'll ask him for any sorces he recommends :)

I certainly didn't mean to scare you with my post, and I don't think you are doing harm, I think you are doing your best to live according to healthy eating principles as you understand them, which is true of all of us here I feel :)

Hello Princess Leah :) The question has been asked a few days back, and here's what Weezlie had to say about it at the time:

Oops :o this thread moves a bit quickly for me so I only read back two or three pages!

FWIW I made the calzone for dinner - added in some smoked sausage that was left over in the fridge and they were delicious!

 I am sooo glad I found this out before switching for cheapness!
mardatha - hydrogenated fats are banned by the dutch IIRC because they see them as so dangerous.

Asda do own brand Elmlea-alike don't they? I have it in my head that asda have banned HFs from their stuff so that could be something to look into...

We had the Chicken pie tonight, boys hated it :( Hubby loved it and had 2nd helpings! I liked it, pastry tasted a bit 'funny' to me but I'm a fussy knickers and i'll get used to it:D
my pastry wasn't quite enough (or was i greedy with the filling?)

black bits in the pastry are pepper and the green in the filling is tarragon - I am clearly a herb addict:rotfl:

The boys helped me make a weetabix cake today too, can't believe I haven't tried it sooner. So easy and absolutely scrummy.
The very best is sometimes what nature gives us for free.

  • Weezl,

I am planning on making the lemon and ginger cheesecake this weekend and was wondering if I put it in the oven on the same temp and for same time as the chocolate nut one? Also, is it the same size tin as that one?

    Thank you :)

    Hope everyone is well.
