I'd love to see the liver goulash recipe please Venus. We bought a third of a lamb back in the summer and haven't been sure what to do with the liver. DH isn't overkeen on it and I used to love it but have gone off it lately, so a new way to use it would be great0

I've tested the onion rings tonight - I made a half batch, as that was more than enough for the three of us as a side dish, so the quantities were as follows:
200g onions, sliced into thick rounds
1 slice HM bread, crumbed (did this in the food processor)
40g SR flour
90 ml water
salt, pepper
oil for frying
I first seasoned the flour, mixed it with water to form a thick batter. Then I separated the onion rounds into rings, dipped each ring into batter, then dipped it into crumbs, then popped it into hot oil. Fried about 5 mins or so until golden.
Verdict from all three of us: very nice:T
Venus, I think that if you put the crumbs straight into the batter you'd end up with a bready dough that you could then mix with chopped onions and form into rings for your preferred version. This was a bit too much faff for me though0 -
They look nom Allegra.
We have 1/4 of a cow arriving in 2 weeks, am feeling a bit nervous that we have bitten off more than we can chew! Was such a good deal though and they were raised about a mile away in a field we quite often pass. Less than 20 foodmiles including going for slaughter!Eat food, not edible food-like items. Mostly plants.0 -
Grrrrr! Typed out the whole recipe from the notes my mate H scrawled for me before she rushed out of the office this afternoon :rotfl: and then I went to post and it disappeared!!! So again, here is Helen's Liver Goulash:
In a pan fry onion until it starts to soften, then add finely chopped garlic and sliced mushrooms (she blitzes them in the blender and adds near the end to get them past her boys!), fry for a few more minutes and then set aside, off the heat.
In another pan fry liver quickly until browned but still pink in the middle, add the onions, garlic and mushrooms, stir together then add half a pint of milk thickened with cornflour (H said to add the cornflour to the cold milk, not in the pan otherwise you'll get lumps) and simmer until it reaches a sauce consistency.
At this point add chopped tinned tomatoes, drained of juice and simmer further until sauce has thickened and liver is cooked through. Add cream in the last few mins of cooking if desired for a luxury touch, and serve with rice.
Certainly seems to be a hit in H's house, she uses lambs liver but said you could use pigs or even cows (saw this in Asda today!) liver - about 300g pkt between her and two boys, double that if her OH is eating too (but he is, in her words, a fatboy!) - and she always uses the soak in milk prior to cooking tip mentioned before to neutralise the strong liver taste.
Hope all who try it, enjoy it!
And Allegra - thanks for the tips re chopped onion rings, will have a go at experimenting this weekend and report back!

Poohbear and others who were wanting an electric knife - there's a few cheap ones in Argos at the mo, quite a few are half price - my friend Helen (of Liver Goulash fame, above!) has just found them and had to pass on the link, they've got them as cheap as £6.99:
http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?pp=20&s=Price%3A+Low+-+High&storeId=10001&catalogId=1500002451&langId=-1&q=ELECTRIC+KNIFE
Bargainous! Don't think I'll be investing as don't really have a need for it - and am happy enough with the slow cooker I got last night at Asda for £7 (it's a 3litre one I think, seemed a good price and it's a decent one) and FINALLY got myself a hand blender, Phillips one with a whisk and little cup attachment, £15 instead of £24.99!! :money: Can't wait to have a play around with it this weekend!
Ooh Weezl, got some reduced lemons last night too, so will be making CFR lemon cordial to use in the iced tea I mentioned the other day, will let you know how it goes!
And think I have another CFR convert in good ol' H, she has some chick peas left over from her elder son's Food Tech lesson today and asked for ideas, so gave her the CFR recipe for Morrocan rice and think she's gonna do it for tonight's tea, will ask her for a review! Also printed all the hoummous recipes as she's a chickpea/hoummous fan and of course passed on the CFR link. Some stuff is out of bounds for her as she's Type I Diabetic, but H is more than capable of adapting things to suit, will let you know of any feedback from her.
Bye folks - quiet day at work so it seems, so may be back later!
Have a good'un

Seems MSE is catching i was talking to someone on FB last night who was looking for some ideas for homebakes for her sons school so, ever faithful i recommended the famous Weetabix loaf and a coconut one. She sounded dubious at the weetabix one but is going to give it a go and will let me know how it goes so fingers crossed.
Hope everyone has a good day.
