Do you have a plan for how to reach the £32k? I think I'm doing fantasically when I manage to pay off 5K in a year

That's where it gets tough! Luckily both myself and OH are on good wages at the moment. If we can stick with minimal spending then we should just manage it. OH will need to cover mortgage payments and bills with his salary and manage to put across an extra £500 a month. I need to cover payments for my car, toiletries, clothes, books etc and transfer 4/5 + of my salary each month.

We can do it but if unexpected expenses crop up and it takes more time then so be it. If we've cleared most of it in 4 and a bit years time we can hopefully get a decent mortgage deal when the fixed rate is up. That will give us breathing room for OH to change career and take a pay cut.

We figure we might as well aim high! I just need to remember what are wants and what are needs. When it comes down to it I could probably go 5 years without more clothes, books etc. I'll have the occasional treat but I need to learn to live more simply to reach our goal.

  • Just popped in to say organising a wedding is a PITA, and to remember the point of the wedding isn't the flowers and stuff(although it seems all consuming at the time), and God Bless you both. xxx

Ah thanks grateful. I'm trying to stay focused on the important stuff. I'm happier when things are simple. For me I think getting silk flowers and making my table arrangements etc before will ease the pressure in the run up to the day.

Made 5 single chicken pies and they tasted fine. Hopefully they'll freeze well too. Will have to remember the other things I wanted to learn to cook and freeze- cheesecake, beef pie, fishcakes, stuffed chicken......can't remember what else! Might have a go at Christmas puddings too.

Sounds like you're on the right track. I firmly believe if you're organised then you stand a much better chance. Sadly I'm not organised in all the areas I need to be lol.

I bought silk flowers from Ebay and on the whole I am very pleased with them for the price. The bridesmaid bouquet was too small, and there was some netting attached that I didn't like, but I have bought some ribbon and will just tweak them to suit me. Still much cheaper, and what do you really do with flowers that you hold anyway?

I had fresh flowers and had mine pressed (won the pressing and picture making in a charity raffle). I think if you have some fresh flowers pressing them between books is easy enough and you could have a go at making pressed flower pictures afterwards if you wanted.

I've still got the spare pressed flowers for mine somewhere and I keep meaning to make little piccies for MIL and Mum - one day :D

    Just a random thought.

I got my flowers from a florists supply place out in a barn on a farm, not a shop. I think that probably made them cheaper. Google is your friend for stuff like that :)

I loved organising our wedding - you'll only do it once so enjoy it. Just remember to make sensible decisions and you'll really love the result.

Thanks Katsu- the pressed flower idea is lovely. I'd have loved to make a crystal bouquet but I don't think I have the patience and possibly not the skill!

Have been planning some stuff to make for Boxing Day and might try a couple of bits to freeze later. Possibly bread sticks to start.

Have also decided to attempt making my first dress. Once washing has finished I will wash the material so I'm ready to start.

Sounds lovely - do you have a linky?

Could you have a practice go with cheap beads first? Or could you skill-swap with someone, so you buy this bits, they assemble it for you and then you do something for them in exchange?

Something like this but I have enough things I need to do myself to keep costs down without taking this on, plus OH not keen on idea!

  • sia silk flowers are lovely and so like the real thing. Not cheap, though. Neighbour recently married and bought little silver buckets, popped some oasis in them then stuck one big hydrangea bloom in each, tied a ribbon around. Used for pew ends and took to the reception for table decs also.

Now she's hiring out the little buckets, enterprising, hey??
